He was born in Walla Walla in 1865. He later moved to Yakima, and then to the Chelan country. In 1887, he homesteaded on the north side of the lake against the wishes of the Indians. There were only five white people in Chelan at that time. Lord spent a number of years prospecting and ran the ferry on the Columbia river for three years at LaCapelle Landing, just above the place where the Beebe bridge now stands. He planted one of the first orchards in Chelan and was instrumental in organizing the reclamation project at Manson. In the early 1900's he won the esteem of Great Northern railroad officials by his successful purchase of the right of way for the dam from the Indians. The railway company admitted publicly that without Lord's understanding of the Indians and his friendship with them, the right of way could not have been secured. Lord, during later years, dealt extensively in real estate. In 1901 he was married to Bessie Mildred Decatur. To this union five children were born, Emogene, Richard Decatur, Willard, Stanley Rosswell, and a daughter who preceded her father in death. Mr. Lord died at the home of his daughter in Seattle, Feb. 20. Funeral services were held in the Masonic temple, Sunday at 3. The Knights of Pythics lodge of Cashmere had charge, assisted by Rev. Francis Kinch, Methodist pastor. Mrs. John McDougall sang, with Mrs. June Dynes Harris at the piano. Pallbearers were Elmer Garton, Grover Kelly, Oliver Brownfield, William Emerson, William Park, and Charles Clark. Interment was in the Fraternal cemetery, with Higgins and Son in charge. The body was brought to Chelan Wednesday, accompanied by Richard Lord Jr. He leaves one daughter, Mrs. Walter Elliott, Seattle; three sons; three sisters, Mrs. Nettie LaChapelle, Chelan, Mrs. Alma Holden, Oakland, Cal., and Mrs. Edith Johnson of Central Point, Oregon, and several grandchildren. Out-of-town relatives attending the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. Richard Lord Jr. and daughter, Betty Jean; Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Lord; Mr. and Mrs. Walter Elliot and daughter, Betty Jean, and Mrs. Hazel Ruffin, all of Seattle; Mrs. and Mrs. Dale Roper and Mr. and Mrs. J. P. Rosauer, all of Spokane. Mesdames Ruffin, Roper and Rosauer are all nieces.
