Description	:	Richard John Ficke was born on January 7, 1926, to Arthur and Emma (Vagts) Ficke at their farm home southwest of Utica. He was the oldest of three children born to this union, having two younger sisters, Gladys and Elaine. Richard received the blessing of Holy Baptism on February 14, 1926, at St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church (Iowa Synod) southeast of Seward, by Rev. Ottosburg. His baptismal sponsors were his grandfather John F. Ficke and his uncle Henry Vagts. Read More	Richard John Ficke was born on January 7, 1926, to Arthur and Emma (Vagts) Ficke at their farm home southwest of Utica. He was the oldest of three children born to this union, having two younger sisters, Gladys and Elaine. Richard received the blessing of Holy Baptism on February 14, 1926, at St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church (Iowa Synod) southeast of Seward, by Rev. Ottosburg. His baptismal sponsors were his grandfather John F. Ficke and his uncle Henry Vagts. Richard confirmed his faith in the Triune God and was welcomed as a communicant member at St. Paul's Lutheran Church (LC-MS), in Utica, on Palm Sunday, April 2, 1939, by Pastor Ervin Hartman. Richard was an honor graduate from the 8th grade at School District #56 south of Utica, and graduated from Utica High School in 1943 as his class Salutatorian. Richard loved music and he played the coronet all four years in the Utica High School band and in the town summer band concerts held at that time. He enjoyed playing the guitar and sang tenor in the church choirs for many years. Richard was engaged in farming near Utica with his father from 1943-1960. Richard served in the US Army in Germany during the Korean Conflict from 1952-1954. He was honorably discharged as a corporal in 1954. On April 8, 1956, Richard was married to Marcella Klintworth at St. John Lutheran Church in Seward by Pastor Martin Yauk. They farmed southwest of Utica until 1960 when they moved to 4021 X Street in Lincoln. Richard was employed at American Stores from 1959-1982, and retired from Lincoln Public Schools in 1988. In Lincoln they joined Redeemer Lutheran Church, where Richard served as an elder and was active in Bible classes and volunteering at the church. Richard was a member of the American Legion and VFW #4755-Seward. Richard and Marcella moved to Seward in 2006 when Richard entered Anna Sundermann East Home. He lived at Sunrise Country Manor in Milford before returning to Ridgewood West Care Center in October, 2008. The Fickes then became members of St. John Lutheran Church in Seward. Richard was always present at the church services at the Home and enjoyed hearing the hymns being played and singing along with them. On May 18, 2010, after having fought the good fight and keeping the faith, Richard finished the race and passed quietly into the waiting arms of Jesus. God granted Richard 84 years, 4 months, and 11 days on this earth, but now Richard has an eternity with Jesus in heaven. Richard was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur and Emma Ficke, his sister-in-law Maria Klintworth and his brother-in-law Ted Klintworth. Richard is survived by: his loving wife and companion of 54 years, Marcella Ficke of Seward; his sisters and brothers-in-law, Gladys and Bob Bluhm of Seward; Elaine and Bill Junge of Lincoln; his brother-in-law, Roland Klintworth of Seward; his sister-in-law, Rose Klintworth of Seward; four nephews and their families, many extended family members and friends.
