Friedrich, son of Orchard "Pete" and Myrna (Whitla) Friedrich, was born September 7, 1938, at Spencer, Nebraska. Richard died Friday June 7, 2013 in Omaha, Nebraska. Richard grew up in Spencer, where he attended Spencer High School. In 1956, Richard moved to California, where he worked as the assistant manager for Payless Drug. On April 9, 1958, Richard was inducted into the United States Air Force in Texas, where he underwent Basic Training, and Tec School for half a year to receive his aircraft mechanic training. In 1959, he was stationed in Frankfurt, Germany, where he served as an aircraft mechanic for one year, and then as a flight engineer over Europe for two and a half years. On August 14, 1961, Richard was married to Gudrun Ehrhardt at Frankfurt. The couple was blessed with four children: Hans Peter, Ingrid, Evelyn Ann, and Curtis Paul. After receiving his Honorable Discharge from the Air Force on October 23, 1962, Richard and Gudrun returned to his hometown of Spencer to raise their family. When the young couple first moved to Spencer, Richard worked with his parents in the Gambles Store, doing small engine repair and appliance work. He also worked as a chef/cook at the Niobrara Steak House on Saturdays and Sundays for a year and a half. However, the career that most people will remember Richard for was his building and contracting work. He worked on and built a number of homes in and around the community of Spencer. Richard's final contracting job at the time of his retirement was designing and building a two-story home in Lake Andes, South Dakota. Richard was a member of the United Methodist Church in Spencer. He was active with the Spencer Fire Department for over 30 years, served with the rescue squad for 18 years, was a member of American Legion Post #78 of Spencer, and was a charter member of the Lions Club. Richard served on the Spencer City Council for several terms, and also served as Chairman for Spencer Township. He died June 7, 2013, at Omaha, Nebraska, at the age of 74. Richard is survived by his wife of over 51 years, Gudrun Friedrich of Spencer, Nebraska; sons, Pete and wife Linda, and Curt and wife Ronna; daughters, Ingrid and husband Greg, and Evelyn and husband Joe; nine grandchildren; one great-grandchild; brothers, Howard and wife Barbara, and Bruce and wife Jeannie; and sister, Helen. He was preceded in death by his parents, Orchard and Myrna.
