Description	:	Richard K. "Dick" Coates, 86 of Fremont died Tuesday, November 23, 2010 at his son's home at Fremont. He was born October 7, 1924 in Elk City, Nebraska to Lawrence and Lucy (Richardson) Coates. He grew up in Waterloo, NE. He worked for the Nebraska Ordnance Plant at Mead, NE and then served in the U.S. Army during WWII, from April 1, 1943 to December 10, 1945. "Dick" Coates, 86 of Fremont died Tuesday, November 23, 2010 at his son's home at Fremont. He was born October 7, 1924 in Elk City, Nebraska to Lawrence and Lucy (Richardson) Coates. He grew up in Waterloo, NE. He worked for the Nebraska Ordnance Plant at Mead, NE and then served in the U.S. Army during WWII, from April 1, 1943 to December 10, 1945. He served at Normandy, Northern France, Ardennes, Rhineland and Central Europe. After his discharge he returned to Fremont and worked at Platte Valley Tile in Valley and then Hormels for 36 years before retiring in 1984. Dick married Wilma Buhrig June 30, 1946. She died January 4, 1981. He married Hazel (Peterson) Fornoff October 17, 1986 at Wahoo. He was a member of Mead Covenant Church in Mead, NE, V.F.W. Post 854 of Fremont and the Elkhorn Valley Sams Camping Club. Dick was also a water recovery diver and he helped train others in water recovery. He coached swimming at the YMCA and Fremont Public Pools. Survivors include: wife, Hazel; Sons – Richard "Rick" Jr. (and wife Mary) Coates of Fremont, and Keith (and wife Pam) Coates of Springfield, MO; Daughter – Jeri Lynn (and husband Rob) Schultz of Lincoln, NE and Step-Daughter – Joy Ann Fornoff of Wahoo, NE; 12 Grandchildren and 15 Great Grandchildren. He was preceded in death by: Parents; First Wife, Wilma; Daughter – Carol Ann Clifton: Step-Son - Dan Fornoff; 3 Brothers and 1 Sister. The funeral will be 9:30 A.M. Saturday, November 27, 2010 at Calvary Baptist Church in Fremont, NE. The Rev. Phil Schmidt and The Rev. Lyle Pearson will officiate. Visitation will be Friday, November 26, 2010 from 2-8 P.M. with the family receiving friends from 6-8 P.M at Moser Memorial Chapel, Fremont. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service Saturday at church. Burial will be in Ridge Cemetery, Fremont with military honors conducted by V.F.W. Post 854 and American Legion Post 20 of Fremont. Memorials may be directed to the Fremont YMCA.
