Cranor, age 86, of Greens Fork, died Wednesday, April 13, 2005, at Reid Hospital. He was born Oct. 17, 1918, in Greens Fork to Chauncey C. and Alberta Knollenberg Cranor and resided in this community all of his life. Richard was a 1936 graduate of Greens Fork High School and played on the famous basketball team. Through his concern in the betterment of farming procedures, he helped pioneer the Hybrid Seed Corn Business in Eastern Indiana by taking hybrid corn as a 4-H project during his high school years as a vocational agriculture student. This original project developed into a business and Richard established his lifework as seedsman and farmer for over 50 years. He held life membership in the Indiana Crop Improvement Association, was a member of the Wayne County Extension Council, the Indiana Farm Bureau of Clay Township, having served as president at one time, was a member of the Clay Township Advisory Board since 1956, was the first president of the Greens Fork Men's Service Club and was past director of the Agriculture Alumni Seed Improvement Association. He also was a member of the Indiana Shropshire Sheep Association, past president of the Greens Fork Future Farmers of America and president of the Greens Fork Cemetery Association. Richard was very interested in the 4-H program and fair, was the 4-H Fair sheep director and had been awarded the Good Neighbor Award by the Rotary Club and Young Farmers. He was an administrative board trustee of the Greens Fork United Methodist Church, was very civic-minded and helped his fellow man. Survivors include his wife, Nina M. Nicholson Cranor, to whom he was married Feb. 6, 1941; daughters, Rebecca A. Cranor and Beverly K. Cranor, both of Greens Fork, and Cinda L. Cranor of Middletown, Ohio. Funeral service for Richard K. Cranor will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, April 16, 2005, at Doan & Mills Funeral Home, 790 National Road W., Richmond, with Rev. David Scifres officiating. Burial will be in Greens Fork South Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to Adult Day Care of Richmond, 2727 E. Main St., Richmond, IN 47374, or to Greens Fork United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 146, Economy, IN 47339.
