BIOGRAPHY: Dick was a graduate of Chalmers High School, class of 1946. He then received his Bachelor of Science degree in Pharmacy in 1950 from Purdue University. He served as a Pharmacist with the United States Army during the Korean War. Dick came to Alexandria and began working as a Pharmacist at the former Bailey's Drug Store from 1956 to 1965. He then purchased the business and owned it from 1965 to 1978. Dick served his God and his church as a longtime member of the Alexandria Lutheran Church of Our Blessed Savior where he held positions as church auditor, treasurer, lector and chairman of the pastoral relations committee. He served his community as a past president of the Alexandria Planning Commission and as an Alexandria City Councilman from 1964-1968. He was elected Mayor of Alexandria in 1984. Dick was named a Sagamore of the Wabash by Governor Robert Orr in 1987. He was a member and past president of the former Alexandria Jaycees and a former member of the Alexandria Elks and Alexandria Eagles. He was also a member and Past Commander of Alexandria American Legion-Bright Post 87. He was a Republican party chairman for the City of Alexandria, Monroe and Van Buren Townships. SURVIVORS: His wife of more than 60 years, Joy (Summers) Zarse; son, Richard (Kim) Zarse II, Alexandria, two daughters, Joy Lynn (Joel) Law, Carmel, and Brenda (Stan) Daugherty, Muncie; nine grandchildren, Joshua (Annabeth) Law, Jared Law, Amber (Cliff) Ritchey, Travis (Jessica) Daugherty, Trevor (Breanna) Daugherty, Aaron Zarse, Micah (Lindsay) Zarse, John Zarse, Anna (Joe) Kelly; six great-grandchildren, Riley, Cove, Bella, Aden, Owen, Lean; nieces and nephews. PRECEDED BY: His parents; brothers, Edwin Zarse and Howard Zarse; sister, Alma Christopher Rush. FUNERAL SERVICE TIME and DAY: Funeral services will take place at 11 a.m. on Thursday, July 12, 2012 in the Lutheran Church of Our Blessed Savior, 309 W. Washington St., Alexandria. Military honors will follow the services. OFFICIATING: Pastor Kal Rissman INTERMENT: Graveside services will take place at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, July 12, 2012 in St. James Lutheran Cemetery at Reynolds, IN VISITATION: Friends may call at the Lutheran Church of Our Blessed Savior on Wednesday from 4-7 p.m. or after 10 a.m. on Thursday prior to the services. MEMORIAL CONTRIBUTIONS: Are suggested to the Lutheran Church of Our Blessed Savior through the funeral home with envelopes provided at the visitation and services. Care and service arrangements have been entrusted to Owens Funeral Home in Alexandria.
