Read More	Richard "Dick" Lyle Sphuler, a longtime resident of the Bossburg area near Evans, Washington, passed away on April 9, 2021, in Colville, Washington, at the age of 92. Dick was born on December 16, 1928, in Lincoln, Washington, the son of Florian Albert and Minnie Fredrika (Bockhaus) Sphuler. As a young boy, Dick moved often with his family as they traveled between work opportunities. They resided in communities in Washington and Ohio and a few states in between. They eventually found their way to Bossburg, where Dick attended high school in Marcus and graduated from Marcus High School in 1946. He then began working locally for Young American Mines, U.S. Gypsum and Safeway stores. In 1950, he took a job with the Great Northern Railroad and began as a laborer. On September 1, 1950 he married Patricia Jean Johnson and then enlisted in the U.S. Army. He served for three years, during which time he was stationed overseas in Korea. In 1953, Dick and Pat welcomed the first of their six children, all boys, that blessed their growing family throughout the years. Dick raised his family in Bossburg and, following his honorable discharge, returned to work with the railroad. He served in a multitude of positions through his 39 years with the railroad. In 1989, Dick retired from the Burlington Northern Railroad as a supervisor of maintenance. Dick was a man of varied interests. His hobbies, not always long in duration, were many and diverse. He was always on the hunt, whether it was looking for a buck during hunting season, digging for old bottles and buried treasure, or tracking down arrowheads of days gone by. He built a wide variety of wooden treasures, silhouettes and yard ornaments over the years. Dick was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 63 years, Pat; four sons, Jeff, Mike, Dave and Scott; and his two sisters, Elizabeth Breeden and Dorothy Sphuler; and two great-grandchildren. He is survived by two sons, Rick Sphuler of Colville and Jack Sphuler (Alisa) of Evans, Washington, 17 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren. The funeral service for Richard "Dick" L. Sphuler took place on Friday, April 16, 2021, at the Danekas Funeral Chapel in Colville. The graveside service and vault interment followed at the Mountain View Park Cemetery in Colville. Pastor Shane Moffitt officiated. Memorial contributions are suggested to be given to any charity or foundation working towards the research and cure of cancer.
