Goettsch Richard Martin Goettsch was born April 24, 1878, in Stein, Germany. On September 8, 1878, his parents presented him to the Lord in Holy Baptism, and he became a member of the Lutheran Church. As a boy of 8 years in the year of 1886, Richard emigrated to America with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Asmus Goettsch, taking up residence at Keystone, Iowa. Her Mr. Goettsch attended the public school of his day. At the age of 15 he attended Tobin's Business Academy in Vinton, Iowa. Still later in life he studied pharmacy at Highland Park College in Des Moines and passed the board of Pharmacy in the year 1907. But his days as a student continued. Even when he was already 50 years old, Mr. Goettsch studied law under Judge Coyle at Humboldt three nights a week for a period of three years. At the age of seventeen, he went to Davenport, Iowa, where he was employed as a grocery clerk. In the spring of 1897, Mr. Goettsch came to Renwick to make his home and he has resided here ever since to the time of his passing. In the fall of 1897, having met the requirements and having been duly instructed in the doctrines of the Lutheran Church, Mr. Goettsch upon laying down a confession of his faith was received as a member of St. Paul's Church, Renwick, Iowa by confirmation at the hands of the Rev. S. H. Siefkes. Margaret Helmke, oldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Claus Helmke, on January 1, 1902, joined hands with Mr. Goettsch in holy matrimony and hand in hand they walked life's pathway for almost 47 years. The marriage was solemnized by the Rev. Reinecke, then pastor of St. Paul's. This bridal couple was privileged to celebrate the 45th anniversary of marriage in 1947. This union was blessed with two children, a son, and a daughter, both of whom survive their father. They are Mr. Alfred Harold Goettsch of Renwick, Iowa and Mrs. H. H. Kelly of Tucson, Arizona. Mr. Goettsch held many positions in civic life throughout his lifetime, such as town treasurer and member of the town council. At the time of his death he was treasurer of the Renwick School Board. Mr. Goettsch was a member of the Viona Lodge No. 528 A.F.M.F of Renwick, a member of the Royal Arch Masons of Iowa, Eagle Grove Chapter No. 123 R.A.M., a member of the Royal and Select Masters of Iowa Median Council No. 26 R. and S. M. of Eagle Grove. For a number of years Mr. Goettsch has been in poor health, yet he courageously bore his afflictions until forced by circumstances to lay aside his work in more recent months. Last Sunday, his conditions became very acute, but he continued to live until his cup of suffering being full, he was mercifully relieved by a gracious and loving God. He was called home at 7 p.m. Thursday evening, December 9. The deceased attained the age of 70 years, 7 months and 15 days. There remain to mourn his loss his sorrowing wife and two children, one brother, Mr. H. E. Goettsch of Renwick, one sister, Mrs. John Wagner of Davenport, Iowa and three grandchildren, together with many friends and acquaintances. Another chapter of life has been concluded and we may say in review that Mr. Goettsch was a student, a lover of books, a conscientious business man, a civic minded individual, who was always interested in the promotion and advancement of his community and sough to be helpful to others. And perhaps these few words of the poet will sum up aright his life: "He lived by the side of the road and was a friend of man." May he rest in peace. The funeral services were held from the home Sunday afternoon December 12, 1948, and were continued at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Renwick, Iowa, the Rev. Paul C. Lutz officiating. Favorite hymns of the deceased, "Whispering Hope" and "Going down The Valley," were rendered by Mrs. C. A. Richardson and Mrs. S. C. Maurer, accompanied by Marilyn Paine. Many floral tributes and memorials were presented in honor of the deceased. The pallbearers were S. C. Maurer, Harl Gimer, C. A. Richardson, Fritz Britt, R. E. McGowan and Leo Mimbach. Interment was made at Elmwood Cemetery. Those from out of town attending the funeral were Mrs. H. H. It was their oldest daughter Maggie's eighteenth birthday and also her wedding day. She was united in marriage to Richard F. Goetsch from Keystone, Iowa by Rev. Reinke, pastor of the Lutheran church of Renwick. Promptly at twelve o'clock to the strains of a beautiful wedding march, rendered by Rev. Meyer, they took their place attended by Miss Martha Goetsch and Fred Miller. The bride was dressed in blue trimmed in white and the groom wore the conventional black. After an impressive marriage ceremony congratulations were offered by a bountiful wedding dinner. They were about sixty guests present. The happy couple started for Keystone the next day for a visit among relatives.
