Funeral Mass will be 10:00 a.m. on Friday, April 12, 2013 at the Holy Name Catholic Church in Watertown with Father John as Celebrant. Interment will be at the St. Mary's Cemetery in Watertown, SD. Military Honors will be conducted by the Codington County Post 17 of the American Legion in Watertown, SD Army National Guard, and Patriot Riders of South Dakota. Visitation will continue prior to the services at the Church. Honorary pallbearers will be Richard's family and friends. Pallbearers will be Richard's sons: Doug, Brad, John and Tim Drake; grandson-in-law, Zach Hagen; and friend, Dan Miller. Richard Milton Drake was born February 25, 1930 to Soren and Mable Ann (Noe) Drake in Watertown, South Dakota. He was raised in Watertown where he attended school and graduated from Watertown High School in 1948. During high school, Richard worked for Gambles Department Store in Watertown. On June 30, 1950 he married his high school sweetheart, Barbara Bradshaw, at the Immaculate Conception Church in Watertown. Richard enlisted in the U.S. Army in November of 1950 and served during the Korean War. He was discharged from the military in October of 1951 and returned to Watertown. Richard went to work for the Metz Baking Company in the sales department in 1952 and retired in 1992 after being employed with the company for 40 years. He then drove school bus for the Watertown school system from 1992-2005. Richard was a member of the Holy Name Catholic Church, Magic Mile Lions Club, American Legion Post 17, and Elks Lodge. He enjoyed hunting, riding his Harley Davidson with his wife, Barbara, and was an avid golfer and gardener. Richard had a passion for his Country and Community and enjoyed selling Christmas trees and collecting eye glasses for the Magic Mile Lions Club. Richard was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Barbara, of 53 years; and three sisters, Elaine DeWall, Eleanor Brehm, and Waneta Edmison. He is survived by his sons: Douglas Edward Drake of Pierre, Brad Alan (Sandie) Drake of Watertown, John Richard (Mona) Drake of Clear Lake, and Timothy Scott (Sue) Drake of Eau Claire, WI; Six grandchildren: Dr. Joe Richard Drake (Ryan Peake) of Fort Mill, SC, Courtney Drake of Albuquerque, NM, Cassie (Zach) Hagen of Watertown, Britanie Drake (special friend, Jesse Sanders) of Gary, Nathan Drake of Clear Lake, Staezia Drake of Eau Claire, WI, and step-grandson, Derek Beck of Eau Claire, WI; Four great-grandchildren, Addisyn, Jewelia, Lorelai, and Reese; and his special friend, Gwen Brophy, and her family.
