While he had been sick for several weeks with catarrh of the stomach, a portion of the time confined to his bed, he had so far recovered as to be able to walk about, and came uptown and voted at the school election a weak ago last Monday. On the evening he died he walked about considerably and retired early. About 10 o'clock his stepson, Robert, went to his room and thought he noticed a death like look on his father's features and called to his mother when they discovered that he had passed away, probably from heart disease. Mr. Cushman was a man of excellent qualities, honest and reliable in every way, and highly esteemed by all his neighbors and friends. He was born in New York in 1836, thus being in his 68th year at his death. He came to Iowa in his early youth and on August 10, 1862, he enlisted la Co. D, Iowa infantry, and was discharged on August, 1865, thus devoting three years in the service of his country. He joined Perry Wright Post June 1, 1893. The deceased was married to Miss Peonele Knight in Clinton county at an early age, to which union one son, Roy, was born. He was married again in 1880 to Mrs. Huldy Miller. He has two brothers living, one at Calamus, Iowa, and the other in Cherokee county, and one sister, Mrs. Juber in Wyo.. The bereaved wife and near relatives have the sympathy of all. Mr. Matson Mowder belonged to the same regiment Mr. Cushman did and was with him during his entire army service, testifying to Mr. Cushman's excellent record as a soldier. Mr. Mowder, though in his 80th year carried the flag to and from the cemetery, and was much affected by the laying away to rest of his long, true friend and faithful comrade.
