Born January 2, 1934, in Lake City, Iowa, Richard Paul Bauer was the son of Fred and JoAnne (Johnson) Bauer. He grew up on a farm near Breda and graduated from Auburn High School in 1952. Richard enlisted in the United States Army, serving as a radio operator in Germany from 1955-57. After returning to Iowa, Richard began trucking for Heider Manufacturing in Carroll, Iowa. On May 24, 1958, he was united in marriage to Maxine Maun at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Auburn. The couple made their home in Carroll for several years and eventually moved to Ida Grove, where Richard had accepted employment at Midwest Industries. He worked as a truck driver and set up trade shows for 40 years, retiring in 2001. Richard worked for Goodenow Transport Ltd. in Ida Grove for the last seven years. Among Richard's interests were woodworking, feeding the birds, and motorcycling. He enjoyed his family, especially his great-grandson, and took great delight in his pet cockatiel, "Jade." Survivors include his wife, Maxine; three children, Rick Bauer and fiancée Diana VandenHull of Phoenix, AZ, Kay Bauer and friend Neil Arbegast of Ida Grove, and Kim (Curtis) Sahl of Ida Grove; six grandchildren, Jerrod Bauer of Des Moines, Nikki Arbegast and special friend Brett Neumann of Battle Creek, Nathan Arbegast of Ida Grove, Sarah Sahl of Ames, and Kyle Arbegast and C.J. Sahl, both of Ida Grove; a great-grandson, Casey Neumann; and three sisters, Lois Stilen of Omaha, NE, Arlis (Al VanDerLeest) Bauer of Cheyenne, WY, and Ruth (Marvin) Mohr of Ord, NE. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Dean Bauer; and a grandson, Eric Bauer.
