Richard Paul Haug was born on December 17, 1916 to Oswald and Artie (Goodroad) Haug on a farm in Deuel County, SD. Richard was baptized in the Lutheran Church in Estelline, SD. He grew up on the family farm and helped work it. Later, Richard also drove a school bus and had a partnership in a garage in Castlewood, SD. In 1942 at Camp Barkeley, TX, Richard enlisted in the U.S. Army Infantry, 90th Division. He also served in the U.S. Corps of Military Police at Camp Maxey, TX. In 1942 Richard was united in marriage to Alice Norman. They lived in Clear Lake, SD where he worked at the Ford garage. In 1945 they moved to a farm in the Hidewood. In 1950 they moved to a farm near Brandt, SD where they farmed until 1972 when they moved into Brookings, SD. Richard worked for Federal Crop Insurance as a field man. He retired from the Federal Crop Insurance in 1978. Richard did odd jobs and painted homes. In 1985 they moved to Clear Lake, SD where Richard sometimes helped his son, Wayne, survey. Alice passed away on June 21, 2011. Richard entered the Deuel County Good Samaritan Center in Clear Lake, SD on June 2, 2011 and remained there until his passing on Thursday, February 16, 2012 in the Sanford Deuel County Medical Center at the age of 95 years, 1 month and 30 days. They attended the Presbyterian Church when they lived in Brookings and were members of the Congregational Church of Clear Lake, SD. Richard served on many church boards and was a school board member of District #50 in Brandt, SD. He was a member of the American Legion Post in both Brandt and Clear Lake, SD. Richard enjoyed fishing, golfing, dancing, reading, playing cards and visiting with his coffee friends and family. He also enjoyed working in his shop making toys and other things for family and friends. Richard is lovingly remembered by his daughter Judy (Alvin) Nielsen of Brandt, SD and son Wayne (Karla) Haug of Brookings, SD; seven grandchildren: Laurie (Rick) TeGantvoort, Todd (Jolyn) Nielsen, Kevin Nielsen, Dawn (Michael) Fritz, Kara (Mark) Aughenbaugh, Karleen (Kevin) Fry and Kathy (Dan) Wing; 16 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; one sister-in-law, Gladys Haug of Estelline, SD and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Richard is preceded in death by his wife Alice Haug, parents and two brothers, Lyle Haug and Floyd Haug.
