In the death of Richard Modlin chords of loving sympathy and deep sorrow have been touched in many homes. For 26 years Richard has been actively identified with the moral and material interests of our community. He came to Nebraska and Seward county in the pioneer days, when the long stretches of prairie gave persuasive welcome to people of brave hearts and strong hands. He came for better or for worse, toiling on in confident hope, when may others succumbed to the hardships of those beginning years and retreated in dispair [sic] before grasshoppers and drouth. Out of fertile, alluvial soil he carved a good farm and established for himself and family a comfortable home. Born in Henry Co., Ind., and springing from the sturdy stock of Quaker parentage, he possessed in heredity and by steady continuance in well doingthe characteristics of a true manhood. Quiet and unassuming in deportment, he cemented strong friendships by a straightforward and upright life. His marriage to Mary A. Hedges, who survives him, occurred Aug. 6, 1863. Nine children were born to them, 3 sons and 6 daughters, all of whom, except one daughter, are now living and were present at their father's funeral. Richard had three brothers and two sisters, viz.: John, his twin brother, L. M. Modlin of El Reno, Oklahoma, Oliver, who resides in Minnesota, Mrs. E. K. Hormel and Mrs. Harrison Starbuck. With the exception of Oliver they are well known to our people as first-class citizens and an honor to our young commonwealth. Many will remember good old Father Modlin who came from Indiana to tarry here among the children, until like a shock of corn fully ripened, he was gathered to the heavenly garner. Richard united some years ago with the M. E. Church at Pleasant Lawn, and maintained with that communion a faithful membership until his death. The funeral services were held on Thursday, the 23d, and were conducted at the Pleasant Lawn Church by his pastor, Rev. D. P. Kline, in the presence of a large and sympathizing concourse of friends and neighbors. The text chosen for the occasion was taken from John's Gospel, 14th chapter, 1st, 2d and 3d verses. The burial was at Ulysses cemetery. For 21 years the writer has known the deceaesd as a friend and neighbor, and now has a keen sense of personal bereavement in the death of Richard Modlin. In common with many others who read these lines, we have pleasant and abiding memories of the early days of mutual toil and blessing, and there is a special and loving niche in our hearts for these, our dear old friends in pioneering.
