Based on my limited research, I believe Richard may have been the son of Andrew Martin (b. 1808 in VT) and Julia Lucia/Lussier (b. abt. 1823-4 in Canada) . There is a marriage record for Andrew and Julia from November 3, 1838, in South Hero, VT (see https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XFK3-P5H). According to that record, Andrew's parents were Isaac Martin and Sabra Harrington. All of the Censuses listed for Richard S Martin (see above) state his father was born in Vermont while his mother was born in Canada or France East. South Hero/Grand Isle, VT, the location of Andrew Martin and Julia Lucia's wedding, is located on an island in Lake Champlain, between the Vermont and New York border. Clinton Co, NY, referenced below, is immediately west on the New York side. Canada is only a few miles north.
