Military Honors will be conducted by the VFW Post 6256 and O’Hara Seeley Post. Richard was born in Magnolia on Feb. 2, 1944, on Groundhog Day, to Dean and Martha Girton. He had six sisters and one brother and several nieces and nephews. Richard graduated from Magnolia High School in 1961 at the age of 17, and then enlisted in the Navy and was first stationed on the USS Iowa ("Our Liberties We Prize, Our Rights We Will Maintain") to begin his 28-year service in our nation’s armed forces. During his time in the Navy, he made many new, lifelong friends. On Sept. 5, 1970, Richard married the love of his life Ana Louisa Fermintes. In October of 1977, they wanted to expand their family and adopted a little girl and boy, Carrie and Sherman “Tony” Girton. Richard had a love of life, riding horses in shows and golfing. He also had a love of country and the Navy, and always selflessly gave everything to help anyone in need and put other’s needs ahead of his own. In 1997, he became a grandfather and then again in 2009, 2011, and 2012. Richard is preceded in death by his parents, wife, one brother, and four sisters. Survivors include his children, Carrie A. Beller and husband, Anthony, of Carson, and Sherman Girton of Carter Lake; grandchildren Kylie, Ryley, Mylie, and Kevin; sisters, Alice Landon of Logan and Ardith Crow of Arizona.
