The subject of this sketch was born in Virginia, fifty miles from Richmond, June 8, 1807. He removed from there to Rush county (Indiana) in 1829, and in 1833 to his present location, two miles south of Fortville, on a nice farm. When in his 20th year he was married to Elizabeth Jackson, an emigrant from North Carolina. Seven children were born to them, two boys and five girls. Three are still living. The daughter, Sarah, married Joseph Whittaker. They are now living in Kansas. Elizabeth married John T. Pridgen, a prosperous and influential farmer living not far from Mr. Stoke's home. He is a Democrat, but like many others is a reader of the REPUBLICAN. The son, John, married Sarah Dobbins, a sister of Enoch Dobbins. They now live in Kansas. After forty-five years of married life and toilesome pioneer experience, and faithfullness over a few things, his wife was called over, and her dust reposes in the Jackson Cemetery in Green township. Sixteen years ago he was married to Tibitha Huston his present wife. Mr. Stokes has twenty-one grandchildren living. One of the grandaughters is the wife of James Goble, of Greenfield, a son of our old printer of the Home & School Vistor, so well known in every household in the land, and so well prized by the little ones. Another is the wife of Benjamine Rush, one of Vernon townships most systematic and industrious farmers. One to Mr. Buck of Vernon township, another to Tim Vanzant, living in Fortville, and another to Marion Clark, living in Kansas. Of his grandsons, most are bachelors, some are living at Oaklandon, and two in Kansas. There is quite a contrast between Mr. Stokes 180 acre farm of the present and past. When he first settled there it was in the wilderness, among wolves and owls. He viewed the ground where Indianapolis now stands, but concluded he did not want such poor beech land that was fit for nothing but pasture. His nearest neighbor was Marion and Frank Steele's Grandfather, two miles away. Mr. Steele's sons were John and Tom, who were famous coon hunters. They wore coon skin caps and deer skin moccasins. They paid for eighty acres of land in furs. When clearing in the spring wild turkey and deer would eat the buds from the fallen timber. Mr. S caught seven goblers in a rail pen at one time. Their wheat crop had to be hauled to Milton and Laurel, and brought the large sum of 50 cents a bushel. In 1840 they erected a log school-house, and installed a long Yankee and an arm full of ‘birch gads' as teachers of their young hopefuls. Mr. Stokes told an incident of going to mill on Fall creek, accompanied by John and Tom Steele. The mill-dam was broken, and Miller Jenkins told them that they must help mend the dam. They threw their linen, cut brush and mended the dam, Tom Steele falling into the stream and nearly drowning. They got their meal, but the miller toiled it just the same. When it was necessary to go for a doctor after night they would fire a scaly bark tree to guide the return home. Mr. Stokes is vigorous, manages his farm himself, enjoys himself hugely and loves a good joke. Many incidents of Mr. Stokes have been related to me by others concerning the man acts of charity performed by him during his long and active life.
