Description	:	Richard Vernon Blades, 90, of Sioux City died Wednesday, Aug. 6, 2003, at Sunrise Retirement Community in Sioux City. Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Christy-Smith Morningside Chapel, with the Rev. Bernie Colorado officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 2 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., at the funeral home. Mr. Blades was born Aug. 3, 1913, in Castana, Iowa, the son of Hugh V. and Amanda (Miller) Blades. Visitation will be 2 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., at the funeral home. Mr. Blades was born Aug. 3, 1913, in Castana, Iowa, the son of Hugh V. and Amanda (Miller) Blades. He grew up and attended school in Sioux City. He worked with his father doing carpentry work. During World War II, he went to work for Kaiser Aluminum as a welding foreman in the shipyards in the San Francisco and Oakland, Calif. area. He helped build the Liberty ships. He married Jennie Evelyn Carlson on March 17, 1942, in Ponca, Neb. He was employed with Wilson Trailer after the war and worked there for 25 years. He then became a self-employed contractor until his retirement. Mrs. Blades died May 22, 1997, in Sioux City. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, bowling, traveling, playing cards and spending time with his family and grandchildren. He also co-founded the 7-11 Gun Club in downtown Sioux City. He is survived by a son and his wife, Ron and Donna Blades of Sioux City; a daughter and her husband, Janet and Mike Kelly of Sioux City; two brothers and their wives, Glenn and Betty Blades and Harold "Red" and Ardie Blades, all of California; three sisters, Betty Crosno of California, Izetta Ferguson of Sioux City and Annie Herman of Nevada; two sisters-in-law, Jeannie Blades and Yoland Blades, both of California; six grandchildren, Brian and Beth Kelly, Rick Kelly, Julie Stange, Roxanne and Don Meisner, Robert Blades and his fiancee, DeAnne Silbernale, all of Sioux City and Roger Blades and his fiancee, Jamie Connick, of Omaha; and 10 great-grandchildren, Abbie and Emily Kelly, Rachel, Zach and Nick Kelly, Brianna, Ben and Brady Stange, Rachel and Alexander Meisner. He was also preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Frank, Jerry, Orville and infant Blades; and a granddaughter, Robin Blades. Pallbearers will be Robert and Roger Blades, Brian and Rick Kelly, Bob LaFleur and Don Meisner. Honorary pallbearers will be John Holck and Bud Smith.
