Born on Easter Sunday, March 24, 1940, in Cumberland, he was the son of the late Guy F. and Mabel G. Long. He was also preceded in death by his stepfather Roy W. Wilson. He is survived by his loving wife of six years, Margaret J. "Peg" (Walsh) Long. Born on Easter Sunday, March 24, 1940, in Cumberland, he was the son of the late Guy F. and Mabel G. Long. He was also preceded in death by his stepfather Roy W. Wilson. He is survived by his loving wife of six years, Margaret J. "Peg" (Walsh) Long. Also surviving are his Uncle Howard and Aunt Faye Meager of Virginia Beach, Va., and special cousins Ruth Gamlen and husband Lew of Okeechobee, Fla., and Dave Mawhinney and wife Sharon of Cumberland. Also many other cousins in Maryland, Virginia, and West Virginia. He was a 1958 graduate of Allegany High School and attended Catherman's Business School while employed in the service department at Thompson's Buick Corporation. Bill worked at Hercules-ABL from September 1959 to October 1974 until his retirement as assistant director in March of 2000. He was a 911 dispatcher from 1975 to 1985 when he was promoted to administrative assistant to, then director, Owen N. Morris at the Civil Defense (Emergency Management) agency. During his teenage years, Dick (Bill) was owner-operator of "Bill's Sno-ball stand" located at his residence on N. Centre Street. By selling the "five & dime" summer cool drink, he was able to help his parents by buying his school clothes and the family's first automobile. Dick enjoyed traveling throughout the years. Dick was also, at one time, very active with Toastmaster's International, a self-development organization. He won many speech contests and was an area governor for several years. He directed a youth leadership program through Toastmaster's International. He was fortunate to attend a Toastmaster's International convention at Disneyland in Anaheim California. Dick enjoyed reading and listening to music, with "Oldies" being his favorite music. Over the years, he had the opportunity to see, hear, and meet in person major entertainers, including artists such as Bobby Vinton, Paul Anka, Anne Murray, Wayne Newton, and many others. He has a large collection of photographs with the personalities, including autographs. Dick was Protestant by faith. Over the years, he attended Cornerstone Baptist Church and Fairview Avenue Methodist Church. Family and friends will be received at the Upchurch Funeral Home, Cumberland. The funeral service will be conducted at the funeral home on Thursday at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Benny Brakeall officiating. Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Park. Memorial contributions may be made to the Allegany County League for Crippled Children. The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to the Cumberland Fire Department & Ambulance for the kind manner in which they assisted Mr. Long.
