On Tuesday morning, August 30, at 10:20 o'clock, the sweet, pure spirit of little Riley Jackson, the youngest child of Mr. and Mrs. John Jackson, of Liberty township, took flight to a brighter and better world. For about two weeks Riley had been sick with membraneous croup and catarrhal fever, although medical aid and the best of care was rendered, on Tuesday morning he closed his lips in perpetual silence, his eyes in eternal sleep and his soul took its unseen flight to the eternal world. The funeral services were conducted at the home by Revs. D. B. Long and Dan Perdue, and the remains were laid to rest in the Ottawa cemetery. When the old die we are consoled with the thought that their life work is done; that death is the inevitable result of life. But when the ranks of youth are invaded and we see the little bloom before it has unfolded many of its petals, droop, wither and die, we stand appalled and are constrained to ask why should this be, why should this young life so full of beauty, promise and grand possibilities be cut off? Little Riley had not lived long enough in this world to know many of its pleasures or suffer its pains. He had not quaffed the chalice of pleasure nor tasted the cup of bitterness and disappointment. For eight years, five months and twenty four days this little gift of Heaven had been allowed to linger here, and in that short time had wound about his young life the hearts of all who knew him. He will be sadly missed in the home and community for his life was a bright one. With loving hands his schoolmates prepared beautiful wreaths and bouquets of flowers and placed them on his lovely casket. To the grief-stricken parents, three brothers and one sister, weep not for little Riley, but look beyond the narrow pale of this life and see him yonder midst the glory of the celestial world, in that grander, higher life where he waits your coming. The breaking of the social ties that bind us together in this life is painful indeed, and useless it would be to undertake to gild such grief with meaningless words, but the Master never requires a sacrifice that he does not supply the grace and fortitude to bear, and through the tears of disappointment, after awhile, will be seen and recognized the work of infinite love; and knowing that the loss of this young boy has been his great and everlasting gain, his little short life on earth will be a gentle and inspiring memory. Little Riley is gone, but ah no, he is not forgotten. Look upwards dear parents he is beckoning —come. MARY A. PERDUE.
