Funeral services were held on Saturday, February 17, 2007 at 9:30 a.m. at Immaculate Conception Church in Watertown with Father James Bream officiating. Music was provided by the Immaculate Conception Church Choir. Interment at St. Mary's Cemetery, Watertown. Visitation was held on Friday from 4:00-6:00 p.m., with a scripture service at 4:30 p.m. at Wight, Comes & Sogn Funeral Chapel in Watertown. Schmieding, the daughter of John and Emma (Schaack) Schmieding, was born on August 20, 1928 in Watertown, South Dakota. She grew up and attended rural school near Kranzburg, South Dakota. She was her parents caretaker as well as helped on the family farm and worked at The Other Place for many years and at the Bramble Park Zoo where she was known as the "Cat Lady". Rita was a member of Immaculate Conception Church. She loved children and her animals, especially her horses and the big cats at the zoo. Rita was preceded in death by her parents; her special friend, Dan Warkenthien; her two brothers, Casper and Melvin; and her sister, Ann (Harry) Haan. She is survived by her nieces and nephews.
