Ms. Horan passed away Wednesday, August 16, 2017 at the Memorial Hospital in Abilene. She was born December 21, 1926 in Abilene the daughter of Frank and Sarah (O’Donnell) Horan. At the age of 5 Rita contracted polio but still graduated from Abilene High School in 1945 and Marymount College earning a BA degree in 1949. Rita began her Civil Service Career at Indiantown Gap, PA and transferred to Ft. Riley, KS retiring in 1983 as the Chief Budget Officer for Irwin Army Medical Center at Ft. Riley. She was a member of St. Andrew Catholic Church, Fraternal Order of Elks, Ladies of St. Andrew and enjoyed playing bridge, duplicate bridge, reading, and volunteering. Rita is survived by many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Sarah Horan; sisters Mary Kay Mootz, Ruth Gunn, Anna Maria (Peewee) Sullivant; and a brother John Horan. Rita’s final resting place will be in the Mt. St. Joseph Cemetery north of Abilene. The family will receive friends at 5:00 p.m. Friday, August 25, 2017 at the funeral home with a Parish Vigil Service and Parish Rosary being recited at 6:00 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Andrew School or St. Andrew Catholic Church and may be sent in care of the Martin-Becker-Carlson Funeral Home, 414 NW 3rd, Abilene, Kansas 67410.
