Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Joseph Catholic Church In Le Mars, with the Rev. Merlin Schrad officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery at Le Mars. Mrs. Shafer, the former Rita Mary Dreckman, was born Feb. 28, 1921, in Le Mars, the daughter of Bernard and Christina (Deters) Dreckman. She attended St. Joseph Catholic Elementary and high school. She married Richard Shafer Jan. 9, 1940, in Le Mars. The couple farmed near Le Mars until moving into town in 1985. He died Nov. 1, 1990. Mrs. Shafer was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Christian Mothers Society and St. Joseph's Guild. Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Norman (Mary Lou) Walker of Blakesburg, and Mrs. Ted (Betty) Stelton of Huntington Beach, Calif.; two sons, Michael of Boone and Thomas of Springfield, Va.; two sisters, Louise Dreckman of Le Mars and Mrs. Reitzel (Cyrilla) Nordstrom of Cherokee; six grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a sister, Mrs. Frank (Ida) Rolfes and four brothers, Omar in infancy, Andrew, Rudy and Marcellus. The Sioux City Journal, November 26, 1990
