She was born on Dec. 14, 1919, near Massena, Iowa, to Robert and Minnie (Bissell) Hatfield. Rita was a 1937 graduate of Bedford High School in Bedford, Iowa. Rita and Gail E. Porter were married on April 9, 1940 and has lived in Adams since 1976. She enjoyed canning, gardening, crafts, camping, fishing, rug hooking, writing poetry, and sewing. Porter, 92 years of age, of Adams, Neb., passed away at the Johnson County Hospital in Tecumseh, NE. Monday morning, Feb. 27, 2012. She was born on Dec. 14, 1919, near Massena, Iowa, to Robert and Minnie (Bissell) Hatfield. Rita was a 1937 graduate of Bedford High School in Bedford, Iowa. Rita and Gail E. Porter were married on April 9, 1940 and has lived in Adams since 1976. She enjoyed canning, gardening, crafts, camping, fishing, rug hooking, writing poetry, and sewing. Survivors include daughter Jean M. Varallo of Adams; 2 sons, Jack R. Porter and wife Joyce of Mondamin, Iowa, and Thomas G. Porter and wife Barbara of Omaha, Neb.; 7 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; 2 great great grandsons; sister Coryl Pace and husband Wayne of Bedford, Iowa; sister in law Elnora Hatfield of Jacksonville, Florida; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents Robert and Minnie (Bissell) Hatfield; her husband, Gail Porter (2009); 4 brothers and 5 sisters. Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, March 5, at the Adams United Methodist Church with the Rev. Jenae Bauer officiating. Private family inurnment of ashes will be in the Massena Center Cemetery, Massena, Iowa, at a later date. There will be no viewing, but a register book will be available Sunday from 2-8 p.m. at the Griffiths-Hovendick Chapel in Adams with the family greeting friends from 6-7:30 p.m. A memorial has been established with the Griffiths-Hovendick Chapel in charge.
