Read More	Aged 26 Days —— On February 11, 1977, Clara Crouch Scheel and her husband visited the cemetery near Comstock, Custer County, Nebraska where the parents of Amanda Higgins Crouch are buried, as is Robert Crouch, the first born son of Aaron Baird and Amanda Higgins Crouch. Clara, standing beside the grave of Robert Crouch nearly 100 years hence, put her thoughts into poetic prose and these thoughts are shared with you as follows: Friday, February 11, 1977--I stood today where my ancestors stood. In my mind I could see a young couple standing beside an open grave and placing their little twenty-six day old son, Robbie, gently into it.They were dressed in heavy warm coats, the girl Amanda's long dress blowing in the strong north wind; Aaron trying to comfort her and shield her from the blustery weather. Their little son died, the day after their first anniversary, on December 29th, and was buried as soon as they could prepare the ground on this barren grass covered plain. It was on a small rise and in the distance to the east one could see the little settlement of Comstock where some of the early settlers had clustered together. Perhaps the people I see with the mare Amanda's parents and a sister and some close friends. The minister said a few words with Amanda and Aaron answering "Amen. "Then they walked away to the wagons and teams while a neighbor covered the small bundle in a box with clods of frozen earth.
