Mr. Dunnuck, who served two terms as mayor of Fairfield, Iowa., before moving to Lakeland 21 years ago, died of kidney failure Saturday (March 15, 2003) at Health Center of Plant City. He was 98. "We all looked up to him," said his son-in-law Dr. John Glotfelty of Lakeland. "He was hoping to be 100, but he didn't quite make it." Mr. Dunnuck was born Sept. 27, 1904, in Jamestown, Kansas. He managed several theaters and operated various businesses over the years. As a master checker player, he dominated his age class -- and younger classes -- at the Polk County Senior Games for 10 years. A photograph of him beating his doctor at checkers at the age of 98 was published in the Journal of the American Medical Association. Mr. Dunnuck also played tennis, starting in 1936. He played at the Lakeland Municipal Tennis Courts until he was 94. He often won the gold medal at the annual senior tournament in Fairfield. The annual Robert Dunnuck Tennis Tournament in Fairfield is named in his honor. From 1958-59, and 1964-65, Mr. Dunnuck served as mayor of Fairfield. He will be remembered for helping the town move forward. The town paved dirt roads, built new buildings and renovated old ones. He was an outgoing man who believed he could help the town, said his daughter, Bonnie Glotfelty of Lakeland. Mr. Dunnuck was preceded in death by his wife, Jennie May Dunnuck. In addition to his daughter and son-in-law in Lakeland, Mr. Dunnuck is survived by his daughters, Shirley May Gossick, Buffalo, Wyo., and Loretta Ann Johnston, Fairfield, 12 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Heath Funeral Chapel in Lakeland. Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Church of the Brethren Cemetery in Libertyville, Iowa. Memorials may be made to the Florida Southern College Athletic Department, 111 Lake Hollingworth Drive, Lakeland, FL 33801, or to the Polk County Senior Games. ************************************
