Funeral services were held at 10:00 a.m., Friday, August 27, 2004 at St. Mark's Lutheran Church with Pastor Jack Coffey officiating. Interment was in Ash Hollow Cemetery, near Lewellen with Military Honors. Pallbearers were Troy Carlson, Larry Peterson, Dennis Allen, Pat Thelander, Mike Waltman and Pete McGinley. Honorary Pallbearers were Pete Olson, Hadley Hill, Harlow Hill, Moe Moffat, Shawn Lake, Trevor Schwartz and all of Bob's long-time friends and neighbors. In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established to the church and to the Garden County Health Services Foundation. Holechek Funeral Home in Oshkosh was in charge of arrangements. Robert was born on March 22, 1921 on the family farm, Southeast of Oshkosh on the south Table to Albin and Lillian (Ballinger) Olson. He attended District 13 school and grew to manhood on the south table area except for a couple of years in Turloch, California, during the height of the depression. His family returned to live on the Charley Olson farm, and he attended and graduated from Garden County High School. In October of 1942, he entered the United States Army Air Force, where he served with the air transport command, Alaskan wing. He was honorable discharged in November of 1945 at the rank of Sergeant. During the war, Bob and his dad bought the Archie Wynes ranch, south of Oshkosh. He lived there for a short period of time. On January 5, 1947, he married Audrey R. Waltman in Broadwater. They made their home at the Cy Kemplin farm, northeast of Oshkosh. In December of 1948, their son, Jim, was born during the period of the ‘49 blizzard. That same year, they purchased the Fred Mohler ranch from Charles Hayd. In 1951, a daughter, Barbara Jean, was born. They continued to reside north of Lewellen for the next 42 years. They pursued their love of raising cattle and horses on the edge of the Sandhills. As their health failed, they moved to Oshkosh and later to the Riverview Assisted Living in Lewellen, and finally, to the Garden County Nursing Home in Oshkosh, where he entered into rest surrounded by his friends and family. For many years, he served on the Garden County Fair Board and the Ash Hollow Cemetery board. He was a member of St. Mark's Lutheran Church, VFW Post #5379, and the Shaw Jepson Legion Post. He particularly enjoyed his grandchildren and spent a great deal of time with them teaching them his love of life and the great joys of nature around them. He is survived by his wife, Audrey; son, Jim and wife, Carol. of Oshkosh: daughter, Barbara Jean, and husband, Harlow Hill, of Wauneta: grandchildren, Lora Joann and husband, Shawn Lake of Morrill, Jana Kay and husband, Trevor Schwartz of Minatare, Hadley Wade Hill of Imperial, Jennifer Ann and husband, Moe Moffat of Oshkosh, Peter Robert Olson and family of Oshkosh; great grandchildren, Bailee and Beau Lake and Kelsee Moffat; sister, Norma and husband, Pat McGinley of Oshkosh; brother-in-law, Dale, and wife, June Waltman of Oshkosh, Gilbert and wife, Doris Waltman of Lebanon, Oregon; and many nieces, nephews and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; nephew, Dennis, Waltman; niece Peggy Waltman and grandson, Wesley Hill.
