WESTBROOK -- Robert Alphonso Swett Jr., 82, died Dec. 10, 2009, at the Gosnell Hospice House in Scarborough, lovingly surrounded by his wife Beverley and their eight children. Born Dec. 1, 1927, in Westbrook, Robert was a humble man who would never boast, but his family is extremely proud of his many accomplishments. He was a fine and distinguished soldier who served his country well for 24 years. His many decorations included the Legion of Merit, two Bronze Stars, and the Army Commendation Medal. He first enlisted in the United States Army in January of 1946. On June 17 of that same year, he married Beverley Jean Tenney of Portland and soon after he was deployed to Germany where his new bride later joined him. He served three and one half years with the World War II Occupational Forces in Augsburg. When they returned to the States he joined the Army Reserves and was called to serve in Korea for one and one-half years. Upon his return, he became a career soldier in the Army Signal Corps and steadily climbed the ranks. He served two tours of duty in Vietnam and retired in 1971 as a Lieutenant Colonel. After retirement, Robert and his family settled in his hometown of Westbrook, where he served on the City Council; obtained a degree in electronics from Andover Institute; served on the Westbrook Board of Parks and Cemeteries; and was a member and two term president of the Westbrook Lions Club. In 2005, he was named a Melvin Jones Fellow, the highest honor bestowed by Lions Clubs International Foundation. He was a member in good standing of Alcoholics Anonymous for 24 years. He was also the custodian at St. Mary's Church and oversaw their public bean suppers for many years. He was predeceased by his parents, Robert and Leona; two brothers, Alfred and Richard; and two sisters-in-law. Visiting hours will be held Sunday, Dec. 13, 2009, from 3-6 p.m. at Blais & Hays Funeral Home, 35 Church St., Westbrook. A Catholic Mass will occur at 10 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 14, 2009, at St. Anthony of Padua Parish, 63 Dana Court, Westbrook. Graveside services will be held immediately after the Mass at St. Hyacinth's Cemetery, 296 Stroudwater St., Westbrook.
