A small graveside service will be held for family and Bob's friends at 1 p.m. Nov. 21, at the Letts Cemetery. A casual Celebration of Life will be at the Letts Community Center from 3-7 p.m. Robert was born Oct. 5, 1930, on the family farm in Letts, the son of Robert James and Mildred Elanor Anwyl Barnes. He attended the Letts School and went on to Iowa State University, Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity, graduating with a degree in agriculture and later receiving his masters. Married Phyllis Merlene Wilton on June 5, 1955, at the Finley Chapel in Wayland, Iowa. Robert taught school in Mechanicsville. He started the ag program at the Wapello and Columbus Junction schools and the farm management program at Muscatine Community College. He retired from teaching at Columbus Junction School. Along the way, he sold insurance, Walnut Grove, and Ralston Purina, managed the Weber and Houston in Letts and farmed off and on. He spent much of his time attending grandchildren's functions, volunteering in the community, being a scout leader, coaching ball, and helping to start the L-M Booster Club. He was proud of bringing drug awareness to schools. He also was involved in Trees Forever, and was active in the Republican Party and Rural Conservation & Development Geode — all while being the mayor of Letts for 30 years. Robert is survived by wife, Phyllis; brother, Wayne; sister-in-law, Mary Jo (Tom) Patterson of Bettendorf; daughter, Susan Sickels of Cedar Rapids; sons, Jim (Candy), John (Karla), and Steve (Mary) all of Letts; six grandchildren, Robert (Stephanie), Jeremy, Kourtney (Jordon), Annie and Sarah; two great-grandchildren, Aubrey and Alayna.
