Armstrong and Royse, Limited, timber merchants of Carrington, took place suddenly on Monday, at his son's residence, at Tenterfield. The body was brought to Newcastle this morning, and the funeral took place this afternoon, to the Church of England Cemetery. The Rev. W. F. James officiated. Mr. Armstrong, who was 64 years of age, was a native of Ontario, Canada, where his father conducted a timber business. He came to Sydney when he was 18 years of age, and worked for a short time at the various timber yards in the metropolis, and later at Port Stephens and Wickham. Thence he followed his occupation at Nundle and Tamworth. For five years following he was at Baanbaa, or Boolingba, in partnership with, Mr. Horn, and later with Mr. Royse. Afterwards Mr. Royse went to Narrabri, and Mr. Armstrong to the Richmond River. Twenty-four years ago, on the death of Mr. Bibby, of Messrs. Bibby and Tie, Wickham, Mr. Royse took over this business. Mr. Armstrong remained at the Richmond until the business there was disposed of, and then the partners joined forces at Wickham. Eight years ago, following the Government resumption of the Wickham foreshores, the firm was obliged to move to the Carrington side of Throsby Creek, and there they installed an electrical plant, with the best sawmilling machinery in Australia. The partnership between Messrs. Armstrong and Royse has existed for upwards of 35 years. Mr. Armstrong had many interests in timber lands and mills on the North Coast. He took a keen interest in racing, being a member of the Tattersall's Club, and, owning several racehorses among which were Dorwin and Ayrdown. His wife predeceased him three years ago. He leaves two sons, Messrs. Samuel and Robert Armstrong (of Tenterfield), and one daughter, Mrs. Lillian Louisa Middleby (of Weston). Contributor: Lynn (50862977)
