Robert Baker, 83, pioneer of the Porterville District, died yesterday afternoon at the home of his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Paul J. Robinson. He had been in failing health for several years. His death was not unexpected. The Baker family is linked up with the early settlement of the San Joaquin Valley. Bakersfield being named for Colonel Tom Baker, an uncle. The deceased was born in Iowa, July 17th, 1840. His father first came to California in 1852, sailing around the Horn. He settled in Visalia, where he established a store. In 1868 he sold out. That same year Baker Sr. returned to Iowa for his children, three daughters and the son Robert. The trip back to California was again made via the Horn, about two months being required for the trip from New York to San Francisco. The trip to Stockton was made by boat and then by wagon and team to Visalia and Porterville. Baker's father bought a lot at Main and Mill Streets and erected a small wooden storeroom, opening a general merchandise store under the name of Baker and Son. The population of Porterville was less than 200. The majority of business places on Main Street at that time were saloons, and the force at the Baker Store would often be compelled to seek shelter behind the bolts of calico when the cowboys came in to shoot up the town. In the late '70's the son sold out to his father and spent several years in the North, later returning to erect the two-story brick structure at Main and Mill Streets. He later engaged in the orange business, and served the county as supervisor from 1896 to 1900. With the exception of two years, Baker had been a resident of Porterville since 1868. The following immediate relatives survive: A daughter, Mrs. Paul J. Robinson; an adopted daughter, Mrs. Emma Hepburn, of Los Angeles, and two sisters, who reside in the Hawaiian Islands. The following are nieces of the deceased: Mrs. Wilkomentz and Mrs. Charles Nieman of Porterville, and Mrs. Nellie Redd of Los Angeles. Funeral services will be held Sunday, the hour yet to be determined." AND Fresno Morning Republican (Fresno, California) October 13, 1923 (Saturday) "Porterville Man's Funeral Sunday. PORTERVILLE, Oct. 12. The funeral of Robert Baker, pioneer citizen of this district, who died Thursday afternoon at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Paul J. Robinson, will be held Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Robinson home, 910 Oak street. Rev. J. A. Milligan, an old time friend, will officiate. Cremation will take place in Fresno."
