Description	:	Robert (Bob) Bayard Davis, 85, died Aug. 12, 2004, at the Pioneer Medical Center in Big Timber. Bob was born in Salesville (Gallatin Gateway) on April 25, 1919, to Paul Davis and Ethel Todd Davis. Bob was born in Salesville (Gallatin Gateway) on April 25, 1919, to Paul Davis and Ethel Todd Davis. He grew up on a farm on Yellow Dog Creek near Bozeman with his parents, and with three siblings, all still living: William Davis of San Anselmo, Calif., Pauline Swanson of Livermore, Calif., and LaVonne Rush of Port St. Lucie, Fla. Bob attended grade school at High Line School and later Holy Rosary Grade School, and graduated from high school in Bozeman in 1936. During the Depression. Bob helped his family survive by cutting and selling wood. In 1938 he began work on the Valley Garden Ranch in Ennis. Bob married the love of his life, Elizabeth Martha "Betty" Tuttle, on Oct. 15, 1940, in the Presbyterian Church in Bozeman. Ennis and the Madison Valley became and continued to be one of Bob's favorite places to visit and hunt elk with good friends. Later, Bob and Betty worked on the Jumping Horse Ranch near Ennis and the Meadowbrook Ranch near Manhattan. They moved to the Buffalo Jump Ranch north of Big Timber in 1947, then left the ranch in 1959 to live in Big Timber. Bob worked with the Preptone Company for a short while, then the U.S. Forest Service in Big Timber, Bozeman and Plains over the next 21 years. From 1981 until the late 1980s, Bob managed the Industry West ranch on the East Boulder for Ken Davenport. These were happy years for Bob and Betty. In the late 1980s they moved back to Big Timber. Betty died in 1998, and Bob continued to live in Big Timber until his death. Though he was well traveled, he loved Montana and Big Timber. Bob is survived by his five children and their families: Rolla R. Olsen (husband David and children Jennifer and Matthew) of Bozeman, Kristi D. Menix (husband Wilbert and children Sheila, Dwight and Tom) of Billings, Susan Paulson-Davis (husband John and children Jay and Jami) of Helena, Kelly Paul Davis (wife Debbie and children Dan, Craig and Joe) of Missoula, and Tracy D. Bolstad (children Preston and Susan) of Big Timber. Bob loved his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Great affection and respect were mutually shared between Bob and his former son-in-law, LaVern Bolstad. Bob and Phyllis O'Rourke, longtime friends of the family, also enjoyed many happy times over the past six years. Bob had multiple health issues during his life, but had an indomitable, resilient spirit. He was fiercely independent and voiced many times his wish not to be dependent or a burden to others. Whether he was down with grief or illness, he maintained a cheerful perspective, always making the best of situations. He leaves family and friends who loved him and are better for having known him. He was generous with his concern for others and frequently cooked food, including a variety of pies, for friends and neighbors who were in difficult times or who had assisted him in some way. Memorial services for Bob were held at 10 a.m. Aug. 14 at the Buffalo Jump Ranch north of Big Timber. A lunch and pie reception followed at Dallman Hall, St. Mark's Episcopal Church, Big Timber. Bob's ashes were buried next to his beloved wife of 57 years at the Ennis Cemetery on Aug. 14. Persons wishing to remember Bob may make donations in his name to Hearts and Hands Hospice of Big Timber, the American Cancer Society, or to the American Heart Association. He will be missed, but loved forever.
