Description	:	Bob Murphy was born on the east side of the Machias River on Grove Street. For an early part of his life he lived with his aunt, Mary Athelena Murphy (1897- ), and grandmother, Minnie May Huntley Styles Murphy (1871- ), in a small cabin on Narrows Road in East Machiasport. For an early part of his life he lived with his aunt, Mary Athelena Murphy (1897- ), and grandmother, Minnie May Huntley Styles Murphy (1871- ), in a small cabin on Narrows Road in East Machiasport. After graduating Machias High School in 1934 at the depths of the depression, he joined the Merchant Marine carrying cargo from New York through the Panama Canal to San Francisco and Seattle. He then followed in his father’s footsteps – joining the U.S, Coast Guard. Bob, “Pat,” Murphy met Doris R Goodwin (1914-1983) while stationed on the Isles of Shoals, off the coast of New Hampshire. Bob would pilot Dean Jackson’s (head of the Univ of NH’s Marine Biology summer program on Star Island) boat, the Shankhassett, between Great Bay and Star Island and enticed Doris to join him for a first date with a half bushel of lobsters. Doris and Bob were married in the front room of her grandmother’s (Ida Morrison ((1868-1950)) ) home in Piermont, NH. Bob matriculated at Univ of NH, living in the loft over Dean Jackson’s garage while Doris worked as an Extension Agent in Concord, NH. He contracted scarlet fever and recovered in Hood House at UNH and withdrew from UNH for financial reasons.. They moved to Piermont where J Richard (1940- ) was born and from where he sought work with poor results over the northern part of New Hampshire. Moving to The Weirs, NH, Bob found work during the War at Scott & Williams in Lakeport, NH. Roberta D (1941- ) joined the family. Bob worked evenings and weekends at Tarlson’s General Store in the Weirs cutting meat to help feed the family during the rationing of the War. When Elizabeth M Hines Goodwin (1877-1944), 2nd wife of Charles B Goodwin (1864-1955) died, the young family moved to the Goodwin Farm in Gilford, NH to stay with Doris’ “Grampa” Goodwin to be able to grow some of the food for the family. Bob was reclassified I-A in the U.S. Draft Registration, so the family moved back to The Weirs to be near Doris’ brother, John F Goodwin (1916-2003). The War ended and the family purchased the Dutch Colonial house at 850 Endicott Street – the family home until the mid 1980’s. Bob Murphy took a job as Master, Pilot and Engineer (Captain) on the m/v Sophie C with the Winnipesaukee Steamship Co. the summer of 1946. Except for a four-year stint as Lake Superintendent for Goodwin Construction Co., building breakwaters, docks and boathouses on Lake Winnipesaukee, he remained with “the big boats” on the Lake until his full retirement in the mid 1990’s. He became Pilot on the m/v Mount Washington II, then Captain when Capt. Brian Avery retired. Bob oversaw the re-plating of the thinning hull, replacement of the 600 tons of concrete ballast, the addition of two huge diesel fuel tanks aboard the vessel after the cutting the vessel in two and inserting a new 32 foot section to make the m/v Mount Washington its current length. Bob eventually became Fleet Captain, a position he held through semi-retirement years, before fully retiring around 1990. When Doris died in 1983, Bob married widow Maud Trachtel Wyss (1926-??). They wintered in Sebring, Florida and returned to Lake Winnipesaukee in the summers until Bob died in 1994. Bob Murphy was active in the Weirs Fire Department – Air Raid Warden in WW II and later No 1 Nozzle. Bob and Doris were both Active in the Weirs Subordinate Grange #248, Belknap County Pomona Grange, the Weirs Methodist Church – where he became Deacon,. After he and brother-in-law, Jack Goodwin (1916-2003), joined the Masonic Order and together worked through the degrees of the Blue Lodge and the Scottish Rites, Bob and Doris became active in the Eastern Star where he became Worthy Patron. Bob and Doris were active in the Frist Presbyterian Church of Lake Placid, Florida. There is a plaque commemorating Bob and Doris’ many years of service to The Weirs Methodist Church at the rearmost left window of the sanctuary which reads: In memory of the Sustaining Efforts Lovingly Given to The Weirs United Methodist Church by Bob and Doris Murphy
