R. and Bessie Cannon Tucker Georgetown Times April 28, 1939 Body of Missing Youth is Located After Three Days Robert Tucker, Lost Since Sunday, Was Object of Intense Search Drowned in River Supposition Is that Young Man Was Seized With Cramps Upon Going into the Water The three day search for Robert Benjamin Tucker, who has been missing since Sunday, ended about six o'clock Wednesday afternoon which his body was found in Black River about 500 yards above the Lafayette Bridge. The body was discovered by George Lohr after Alvin Dingle had driven Laurice Rhem's outboard motorboat over the spot, disturbing the water and causing the body to come to the surface. The body was brought back to town in the Lohr boat and then taken to the Mayer Funeral Home. A son of the Rev. R. R. Tucker, Methodist minister of McColl, and the late Mrs. Bessie Cannon Tucker, the twenty-two year old youth left home Sunday to row up Black River. When he did not return home that evening, relatives became alarmed and instituted a widespread search. An airplane searching party comprised of Joe Parrish and John Hardy spotted the abandoned boat abut a mile above the Lafayette bridge, as they flew over the area Monday morning. In it was found young Tucker's clothes, and the oars were neatly placed in the boat. It had drifted up against the bank and a small dog, which had accompanied him, was found on the bank. The fact that when the body was found it was clad in bathing trunks strengthens the supposition that he became heated and decided to go swimming. When he struck the cold water he was seized with cramps. Searching parties in boats continuously scoured the river since Sunday night. Coast guardsman Williams and Johnson for Sullivan's Island grappled along the river bottom all day Wednesday, but to no avail. Flood lights were rigged up on the bridge to aid watchers at night. An inquest was conducted by Coroner Herman Gold shortly after the finding and the jury returned a verdict of accidental drowning. Funeral services were held at 11 o'clock Thursday morning at the graveside in Elmwood Cemetery, with the Rev. H. L. F. Shuler, pastor of Duncan Memorial Methodist Church, officiating. Surviving the young man besides his father and step mother; his grandmother Mrs. Mae F. Cannon, and two aunts Mrs. John H. Hardy and Mrs. Harold Bruns, all of Georgetown. He had made his home with his grandmother and Mrs. Hardy. Mr. Hardy, his uncle, directed the search.
