Description	:	ROBERT BENTON CURTIS was the son of MARY ANN "POLLY" WARREN and JOHN MADISON CURTIS. He was the second husband of: MATILDA ANN KIRBY GRINDSTAFF/GRANDSTAFF (1851-1925). Based on their years married as stated on the 1900 US census they were married about 1879 in Ringgold County, Iowa. Their known children: 1) James E. Curtis (1880–?) 2) Edward Curtis (1881–?) 3) Grace Lillian Curtis (1894–1991) ROBERT was born into a literate, abolitionist family, his parents having moved from their home state of Tennessee to Illinois and later Kansas to avoid what his father called the "horrors" of slavery. His father JOHN worked for a time as a bargeman on the Missouri River, later becoming a shingle maker and farmer. On 3 Aug 1857, when ROBERT was 10 years old, his father signed election results as one of three elections judges for a vote held to create an anti-slavery constitution for the territory of Kansas in its long bloody journey to statehood. Following the example of two of his older brothers, EDWARD and BENJAMIN, ROBERT enlisted to fight for the Union, though he would have done so at a very young age even if he joined up in the last year of the War. His service in the 10th. Kansas Infantry (obituary says Company A) is recorded on the headstone application that his daughter, GRACE LILLIAN CURTIS CROOK, put in for following his death in 1939. His headstone is inscribed with the standard Grand Army of the Republic emblem. His death ("Robert Curtis, Old Soldier Dies 14 Jan 1939") was noted in the The Nebraska State Journal - 14 Jan page 5, and on 16 Jan 1939 - Page 2. Both may be found courtesy of Newspapers.com. At the time of his death he was the last Civil War veteran in Otoe County, NE and the last member of the William Baumer G.A.R. Post.
