Foster Died Sunday Evening Bright's Disease Causes Death of Skidmore's Oldest Merchant, Came Here in 1901 Robert Blackwell Foster, owner and proprietor of the Foster Cash Store and the oldest merchant in Skidmore, died at his home here Sunday evening at 6:15 o'clock, January 6, 1924. Mr. Foster came to Nodaway County in 1900 and located in Burlington Junction and one year later, in the spring of 1901 he came to Skidmore and entered the mercantile business and remained until death. For the last few years Mr. Foster's health has been poor and the last four or five months he was forced to give up his duties at the store. In November, last, he went to the St. Francis Hospital at Maryville for treatment where he stayed until he was brought home about five weeks ago. He was a good business and community man. He was always ready to back any movement that was for the betterment of Skidmore and community. A community losing a man like Mr. Foster will soon see the vacant place caused by his death, as he could be counted on doing what he could. The first business telephone and the first cash register installed in Skidmore, was in Mr. Foster's store. A large crowd attended the funeral services which were held at the M. E. Church Tuesday afternoon, January 8. Many beautiful flowers from friends covered the casket and rostrum, among which was a large basket of American Beauty roses from the business men of Skidmore. It was said by many that the floral display was the best that has ever been in Skidmore. Rev. C. H. Sauceman of Westboro, and an eminent friend of Mr. Foster, preached a splendid sermon. Rev. Sauceman was assisted by Rev. J. J. Cokely and Mrs. W. F. Barber sang, "Beautiful Isle of Somewhere." Interment was in the Skidmore Masonic cemetery at which place the Masonic Lodge had charge of the services. Mr. Foster was born in Danville, Iowa, January 20, 1869, and died at the age of 54 years 11 months and 16 days. On November 15, 1891, he married Flora Coad at Danville, and to them were born three children: Grace, of Skidmore, Mrs. Harry Burks of Mound City, and Florence of Skidmore. These with two grandchildren, Maurine Marie and Elizabeth Ann Burks of Mound City, and one brother, Howard Foster of Shenandoah, survive. He united with the Danville Baptist church when about fourteen years of age and held his membership there until death. Mr. Foster helped the local churches and was a true friend of Christianity. He was a member of the local M. W. A. and Masonic orders."
