[Robert Carl] Baker, 44 of near Kellerton was fatally injured early Tuesday morning [July 4th] when the car in which he was riding crashed into the guard rail at the foot of the Wade Hill of Highway 65 [Jefferson Highway, present-day Highway 69], four miles south of Osceola. Baker, George Kirkpatrick and another man whose name has not been learned, were returning to their homes from the celebration. Just why the accident occurred will probably never be known. Whether the lights from an approaching car blinded and confused the driver or he did not see the end of the guard rail has not been learned. The right front wheel struck the end of the rail and the plank on top of the fence was pushed through the car and struck Baker in the abdomen and tearing him so badly that surgeons were convinced he could not live. The driver, George Kirkpatrick, received a broken arm and a severed artery in the wrist. A belated tourist brought Baker to the Osceola Sanitarium and Dr. Shively performed an operation in a vain endeavor to save the man's life, but he died at noon Tuesday. Kirkpatrick was taken to Van Wert where his injuries were attended to. It is understood that the other passenger was uninjured. The car was wrecked. The impact of the plank that took Baker's life was such that the back of the front seat was torn off and pushed into the rear compartment. Baker, of Kellerton, Fatally Injured When Car Struck Guard Rail South of Osceola. R. C. Baker, of Kellerton, 44 years old, a brother of Mrs. Clint McConnell, of Leon, died in a hospital at Osceola Tuesday noon, from injuries received in an automobile accident about 4 miles south of Osceola on the Jefferson Highway. Mr. Baker had attended the celebration at Osceola, and left Osceola about midnight in company with George Kirk (sic, should be Kirkpatrick) and another party whose name we were unable to learn. There were many cars on the road that night which raised a lot of dust, and in some manner the car in which Baker was riding crashed into the guard rail, one of the rails of the fence penetrating the cowl of the car and pierced Baker's abdomen, inflicting a frightful wound. He was taken to a hospital in Osceola and given every attention, but he passed away about noon the following day.
