He had an older brother Carlyle and younger sister Maud. Robert served in the U. S. Navy during World War 1. He married Edith Martha Carter on June 20, 1920 in Ames. He was a farmer but by 1940 he was a clerk in the P&E Dept. at Iowa State. Edith was a laundress for a private laundry at that time. They had four children.
