A celebration of Bob’s life will be held on Friday, February 3, 2017 at 11 AM at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Union City with special honors by American Legion Post #196 and the Marine Corps League. A private interment service will be held at a later date at Riverside Cemetery in Union City. Bob was born on June 7, 1939 in Battle Creek, MI to Carl W. and Helen (Fuller) Miller. He lived in Albion with his family until the age of eight, when they relocated to Union City. Bob graduated from Union City High School in 1958. He served in the United States Marine Corps from 1958-1962, where he engaged in logistics and supply work. On May 2, 1964 he married the former Linda Houvener in Marshall, MI. Together, they reared two sons, Daniel and Timothy, both of whom also served their country. Bob was a talented carpenter who worked 20 years with American Woodcraft in Union City. He then relocated to Parma while he worked performing store planning and installations for Jacobson’s in Jackson. Following Bob’s retirement in 2002, Bob and Linda moved back to Union City. In an era where the institutions of family, church and patriotism are declining, Bob loyally embraced all three and was a role model of loving commitment to those traditional values. He was a strong, quiet presence and a loving shoulder for everyone in his family to lean on when in need. He served as his family’s rock and “go-to” person. He genuinely enjoyed being there for others. Many family members called him “daddy” or “papa.” In 2011, Bob was Union City’s Citizen of the Year. He displayed honesty and integrity in all he did, from his membership to Our Savior Lutheran Church, to his 30 years of participation with the American Legion, where he served as commander and adjutant for Post #196 in Union City. Bob was a driving force behind creation of the local Veterans Memorial Park and enjoyed helping maintain it. His reliability was legendary. He loved serving others, whether it be honoring fellow veterans or cooking for those attending a Legion pancake breakfast. Bob liked attending church and going out to eat with Linda. He used his carpentry skills to make her a beautiful sewing cabinet and a hope chest where all of the panels and molding were hand-made. Like the family and community life he constructed, they were put together with Bob’s enduring patience and love. Bob is survived by his wife of 52 years, Linda; a son, Timothy (Cindy) Miller of Battle Creek; a sister, Patricia “Tricia” Johnson of Union City; grandchildren Kristi Duryea of Ft. Myers, FL, Andria Reid of Oregon and Elaina Bailey of Washington; great-grandchildren Javen Duryea and Jada Wines, both of Battle Creek; and numerous nieces and nephews to whom he was like a second father. He was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Daniel; and his sisters, Marilyn Moross and Louise Chaney.
