Description	:	Bob Helzer Bob Helzer, 81, died May 11, 2011, at Seton Williamson Hospital in Round Rock, Texas, following a brief illness. He was born Aug. 1, 1929, in Scottsbluff and raised in Sidney son of John and Katie Helzer (Deines), he lived in many cities from Altus, Okla., Alamogordo, N.M., Denver, Colo., and North Platte, finally calling Meadowlakes his home for the past 13 years. Read More	Bob Helzer Bob Helzer, 81, died May 11, 2011, at Seton Williamson Hospital in Round Rock, Texas, following a brief illness. He was born Aug. 1, 1929, in Scottsbluff and raised in Sidney son of John and Katie Helzer (Deines), he lived in many cities from Altus, Okla., Alamogordo, N.M., Denver, Colo., and North Platte, finally calling Meadowlakes his home for the past 13 years. In his early years, Bob would help his dad run the family shoe repair business in Sidney, polishing shoes at an early age and helping with whatever tasks needed to be done in the shoe shop. After graduating from Sidney High School in 1947, he joined the U.S. Army and served as a Personnel Clerk at Ft. Sheridan, Ill., until his honorable discharge on Nov. 1, 1951. After serving his country, he courted and won the heart of the 1951 Cheyenne County Wheat Queen, Mary Ann Hammond, and they were married in 1952. After owning shoe repair shops in Nebraska and Colorado, he changed careers and sold shoes in Oklahoma and New Mexico before returning to his trained profession of shoe repair and restoration in Denver, Colo. In 1966, he purchased Don's Shoe Repair in North Platte and for many years residents would hail him down or greet him with his "new" name of Don Helzer. In 1978, he sold the shoe repair and boot store and embarked on a commercial real estate sales career, along with motel ownership and management in Kansas, Nebraska and Texas. His final career before retiring was ownership and management of the Perkins Family Restaurants in North Platte and Kearney. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Mary Ann (Hammond); second wife, Betty (Miller); brother, Harry; sister Wilma Moore; mother, Katie; father, John; and brother-in-law, Walter Hammond. He leaves his wife of 10 years, Ruth (Blanton) Helzer; son Dr. Scott Helzer and wife Carolann Gegenheimer, son Bryan and wife Katie Helzer, and daughter Mary Beth (Helzer) and husband Cortney Woods, step-son Curt and wife Teri Blanton, step-son Ken Blanton of Marumori Japan; grandchildren Robbie and Andrew Helzer; James Gegenheimer; Emily Helzer; Seth, Carson and Hayden Woods; Zane, Calia, Samuel, Tabitha, Justus, Claudia, Talitha, Jeshua, Candace, Toby, Tyndale, and Shiloh Blanton; sisters Doris Spearow and Midred Bree; sister and brother-in-law Dan and Marilee (Hammond) Rowan; sister-in-law Helen Hammond; as well as many close friends. Services will be at 10:30 a.m., on Wednesday, May 18, at Grace United Methodist Church in Granite Shoals, Texas. Service and burial arrangements are pending at First United Methodist Church in Sidney. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Grace United Methodist Church, Granite Shoals, Texas, Gideon's International or Marble Falls EMS.
