"Bob" Ernst, 63, of Conifer, Colo., formerly of Mapleton, died Sunday, July 26, 2009, at St. Joseph Hospital in Denver, Colo. Graveside services were Saturday in Mount Hope Cemetery, Mapleton. Robert "Bob" Ernst was born to Herbert and Juanita (Christensen) Ernst Thies on April 3, 1946. He was raised on the family farm, where he became an outdoor enthusiast at an early age. He also developed a strong desire to travel the world after reading the National Geographic magazines. He graduated from Maple Valley High School in Mapleton in 1964. He then attended Iowa State University, where he graduated with a degree in aerospace engineering in 1969. Upon graduation, he was employed by NASA and Martin Marietta in Denver, Colo. He worked in the propulsion department on Titan Launch vehicles until his retirement 25 years later. He married Celesta Morgan on Nov. 25, 1972. The couple were blessed with two daughters, Courtney Darcell on Sept. 16, 1981, and Morgan Anne Ellen on Nov. 3, 1986. He gave his girls the passion to live life to the fullest. He taught them that anything is possible with hard work, determination and dedication to perfection. The couple's dreams of seeing the world were realized when they spent two years traveling through eastern and western Europe, Africa, South America, Central America and Mexico. When he retired in 1996, he and his family enjoyed extensive traveling around the world and spending summers in Alaska fishing. Most of all, he loved spending time with family and friends. The world was truly his home and he was blessed to live his life to the fullest. He is survived by his wife, Celesta; two daughters, Courtney of Denver, Colo., and future son-in-law, Miguel Tobon of Colombia, and Morgan of Conifer, Colo.; his mother, Juanita Thies of Mapleton; a sister, Linda and her husband, Curt Roesler of Coralville, Iowa; and numerous other relatives. He was preceded in death by his father; his beloved stepfather, Martin Thies; and a sister, Nancy Ernst.
