Dale Jackson was born Oct. 5, 1923 in Early Iowa, to Fay and Amber Jackson, later living in Mitchell, S.D., and Sioux City. Following his family's love of baseball, Dale pitched successfully for his Sioux City East High School team. After enrolling in Morningside College, Dale met his lifelong partner, Ellen Westergaard of Whiting, Iowa. World War II interrupted his studies, and he entered the U.S. Navy. He achieved the rank of Lt. J.G. as an amphibious commander aboard the USS Menard, serving in the Pacific Theatre. After Dale and Ellen were married, they moved to Iowa City, where he completed his master's degree in accounting at the university. He then entered the tire business, managing stores in Council Bluffs and Des Moines over the next 45 years. In Des Moines he especially enjoyed attending the weekly meetings of business leaders in the Reciprocity Club. Together with his family, Dale was a devoted member of Plymouth Congregational Church for 50 years, serving as a Senior Deacon and helping to call pastors. Dale also enjoyed being involved in YMCA Indian Guides and Y-Camp, a Little League umpire, president of Stillwell Junior High School PTA, American Field Service (when the family hosted Ram Ganjoo from India), and a longstanding "Square Dance and Dine" group through church. Dale enjoyed several overseas trips, including to Ireland, Scotland and England -- exploring his own family heritage -- and to Denmark sharing time with Ellen's family. After retirement Dale and Ellen moved to Whiting, where they built a home amongst the family farm fields. Dale loved the view west of the farmhouse, out over a pond where waterfowl and sunsets provided constant reminders of nature's beauty. Grateful for having shared Dale's life are Ellen Westergaard Jackson, wife of 65 years; daughters, Dana Blanck and Stan Sutter of Minneapolis, Minn., Laurie Nelson and Peter Nelson of St. Cloud, Minn.; a son, Rick Jackson and Marcy Jackson of Bainbridge Island, Wash.; grandchildren, Erin Blanck and Christian Blanck of Minneapolis, Sara Jackson of San Francisco, Calif., Louisa Jackson of Seattle, Wash., Karen Nelson of Minneapolis, and Kim Nelson of Manchester, N.H.; nieces, Judith Westergaard Pratt and Steve Pratt of Whiting, Iowa, and Karen Westergaard Corderman and Rusty Corderman of Newell, Iowa; and nephews, James Jackson and John Jackson of Marquette, Mich. Preceding Dale in death were his brother, Donovan Jackson; sister, Ardyce Jackson Westergaard; and twin granddaughters, Emily Anne and Melinda Anne Nelson.
