He was born in Lancaster in 1920 to Hermann K. and Helen E. Balthaser, who are pre-deceased, along with his eldest daughter, Carol Sue Swedenborg, and his infant son, James S. Balthaser. Robert taught in several schools including Plain City and North High School, Columbus. In 1957, he accepted a position in the State Department of Education as state supervisor of business and office education, where he worked until his retirement in 1985. He entered the U.S. Navy in 1942 and served 3 1/2 years during World War II. After his discharge, he enrolled at Ohio State University, where he received his bachelor's degree in 1950 and his master's degree in 1952. He held memberships in the German Village Society, the Masonic Lodge, the Ohio Business Teachers Association, American Legion and the Peace Lutheran Church in Gahanna. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Carolyn I. Miller Balthaser fo the home; his son, Robert D. Balthaser, II, of Kissimmee, Florida; his daughter, Sylva M. Riblet of Lexington, Georgia; four grandchildren, Eric R. Swedenborg of Columbus, Kari L. Swedenborg of Lakewood, Carolyn J. Crry of Apopka, Florida, and Kristen F. Freeman of Orlando, Florida. He also leaves his beloved cat, Romeo; brother and sister-in-law, David V. and Bertha Sexauer Balthaser of Lancaster; nephew, John Balthaser, and niece, Rebecca Balthaser McBride, and her family. He will be sadly missed by his family and friends. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Frank E. Smith Funeral Home Chapel, Lancaster, with Pastor Emil H. Klatt, III, officiating. Burial will be at Maple Grove Cemetery. Friends may call from 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Memorials may be given to the German Village Society in Robert's memory."
