Services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Struble, with the Revs. Daniel Greving and James Kramper officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Le Mars. Visitation will be after 3 p.m. today, with an parish rosary at 4 p.m. and a Scriptural wake service at 7 p.m., at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Feuerstein Funeral Home in Le Mars. Robert Daniel Puhl was born Feb. 7, 1920, in a farm near McNally, Iowa, to Michael and Theresa (Westergard) Puhl. He was baptized in the Catholic faith. He grew up on the family farm near Akron, Iowa. He attended St. Patrick's Catholic Grade School through the eighth grade in Akron and graduated from Akron High School in 1937. He enjoyed playing the trumpet in the school band and in Akron summer band concerts after high school. He farmed in the Akron, Chatsworth and Ireton, Iowa, areas after high school before getting married. He married Roseen Schlesser on Oct. 18, 1952, at St. James Church in Le Mars, Iowa. Together, the couple farmed the Schlesser Century Farm homestead near Struble for 50 years. They fed Holstein steers and raised corn, soybeans, oats and his favorite crop, alfalfa. They were longtime members of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Struble and he served the parish many years as a lector. Roseen died Feb. 8, 2002. He retired in 2003 after farming for more than 65 years. He enjoyed participating and socializing at cattle, hay and farm machinery auctions. He took pride in his farm and Case IH red equipment. Survivors include his four children, Mary Smith and her husband, Roger of Sioux City, Nick Puhl and his wife, Debra of Le Mars, Patrick Puhl of rural Le Mars (Struble), and Dr. Eileen Hora and her husband, Curtis of rural Irene, S.D.; nine grandchildren, Alex, Teresa and Daniel Smith, Emily, Erin, Kevin and David Puhl and Andrew and Abby Hora; his sister, Mrs. Frances Kramper of South Sioux City; his brother, Vincent Puhl of Chatsworth, Iowa; his sisters-in-law, Mrs. Vivian Meyer of Estherville, Iowa, and Mrs. Elizabeth Pochop of Le Mars; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; his sister and her husband, Beatrice and Leonard Feldhacker; brothers-in-law, John Kramper, Alvin Pochop and George Meyer; a sister-in-law, Audrey Puhl; a sister, Cecelia, and a brother, William, in infancy. Pallbearers will be Ted Feldhacker, Phil Kramper, Jerome Puhl, Rob Kuiken, Alex Smith, Emily Puhl, Erin Puhl and Kevin Puhl. Honorary pallbearers will be his grandchildren.
