Description	:	Robert David Barr was the oldest of six children born to Gabriel M. and Margaret Rebecca (Ward) Barr. The Barr family belonged to the First Methodist Church in Marcus, Iowa. Read More	Robert David Barr was the oldest of six children born to Gabriel M. and Margaret Rebecca (Ward) Barr. The Barr family belonged to the First Methodist Church in Marcus, Iowa. One of the first baptisms of the "new Methodist Society," was Robert David Barr, on March 31, 1878, even before the church was built. Other Siblings: Sister: Pearl Wanda (Pearlie) Barr, b. June 4, 1886, in Marcus. Died in childhood in Marcus of scarlet fever. Brother: Leslie Garfield Barr, b. September 3, 188_, in Marcus. Died in childhood in Marcus of spinal meningitis. Both are presumably buried in Marcus, but the cemetery has no grave markers or record of burial. Robert graduated from the State College of Iowa and married Gail Loveless in 1902. Rob was Superintendent of Schools for several years, in Dallas, South Dakota. He had staked a claim in the Rosebud Indian Territory in South Dakota, where Dallas was located. He was the Superintendent and sent for his sister, Anna Maude, to come out and teach the settlers. Dallas, South Dakota, was a booming town back then. It was at the end of the rail line, (the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad came there in 1907) in the Rosebud District, 4 miles from the county seat of Gregory, and 19 miles from Winner. In 1910, the population of permanent residents was 1,277, making it the largest city on the Rosebud. Dallas had its own municipal band, with uniforms, a semi-pro baseball team, and horse racing. Large traveling circuses and a Chautauqua would come to town. The Indians would come from great distances in wagons and buggies to see the circuses. In March, 1912, the school district accepted a bid of $27,485 to construct a new school building. This was a two-story building with a basement, of brick construction, which housed the eight lower grades and high school. This building was occupied in early 1913. Rob was Superintendent at the time. He started the "X.L.A. Society," an academic/social organization. He was a good friend of the Superintendent in Marcus, and visited him often. Later, Rob was also a School Superintendent in several towns in Iowa, including Jefferson, Greene County, Iowa, where he was a member of the First Methodist Church. Robert David Barr had 5 children: Donald Daughter Maureen (Robert) Bennett, of Odebolt, Iowa. Daughter Roberta, who never married. She was a school teacher in Gary, Indiana, and retired to Clearwater, Florida. A group of teachers bought a house together. They rented it out in the winters, and had it paid for by the time that they retired. Son Homer G., was a Borden milkman, and his wife, Ann, who worked at J.C. Penney's, also lived in Clearwater, Florida, at 915 Edenville Avenue. Daughter Margaret Leslie. Rob married Ann Lindanman in 1938. In his later years, Rob sold school supplies, then was a clerk at ages 80-85, in the Ellis Hotel (now demolished) in Waterloo, Iowa. He passed away at the Woodlawn Convalescent Home, in Waterloo, where he had resided since November, 1964. Funeral services were July 3, 1965, at the Parrott & Wood Chapel, Waterloo, conducted by Dr. Charles F. Jacobs, First Congregational Church, Waterloo.
