Read More	* IN LOVING MEMORY OF * Robert "Rusty" Sorensen was born on Monday; January 16, 1922, in Corley; Shelby County, Iowa. He was the son of: William and Rachel Cushing Sorensen. Robert attended country school in Corley, Iowa and after school, worked at the sawmill near Corley, Iowa. On August 12, 1942, Rusty enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and served his country honorably until his discharge at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, on October 24, 1945. After his military service during World War 2, Rusty lived in California and worked at his brother's filling station. After a short time in California, Rusty returned home to Corley, Iowa and worked as a hired hand on area farms. On February 23, 1951, he was united in marriage to Dorothy Schneider in Omaha; Douglas County, Nebraska. Four children were born to this union: William, Michael, Paul, and Jean. They continued to make their home near Corley, Iowa until the mid 1960's when they moved into Harlan; Shelby County, Iowa where Rusty tended bar at the VFW. A short time later, Rusty began working at Mickel's Restaurant where he became the night manager for several years before retiring in 1983. In Rusty's retirement, he and Dorothy remained in Harlan, Iowa where Rusty was quite proud of his large garden, especially his tomatoes that he sold out of his garage. Dorothy passed away on Thursday; February 18, 1993 and after her passing, Rusty remained at home in Harlan, Iowa. In April of 2004, Rusty moved to the Little Flower Haven in Earling; Shelby County, Iowa. Robert "Rusty" Sorensen, age: 85, passed away on Sunday; May 27, 2007 at the Little Flower Haven Nursing Home. Those left to mourn his passing are: His sons: William Sorensen of Westphalia; Shelby County, Iowa and Mike (Laura) Sorensen of Dow City; Crawford County, Iowa; his grandchildren: Amy (Craig) Crilly of Harlan, Iowa, Nick Larson, Jackie Larson, Pat Nelson and Cody Nelson of Dow City, Iowa; his great grandchildren: Jazmine, Jonah and Jack Crilly all of Harlan, Iowa; his two brothers-in-law: Francis Schneider of Corley, Iowa and Howard Schneider of Avoca; Pottawattamie County, Iowa; his nieces, nephews, other relatives and a host of many friends. In addition to his parents, Rusty was preceded in death by his son: Paul; his daughter: Jean and his brothers and sisters: Irma Condor, Viola Briggs, Howard Sorensen, Mary Slate, Paul "Bud" Sorensen and Kenneth "Tubby" Sorensen. May they rest in peace. May God bless his memory and give strength to those that mourn. Funeral Services were held on Wednesday, May 30, 2007, at Pauley Jones Funeral Home in Harlan, Iowa. The Reverend Heather Ploen was the officiant of the 2:00 p.m. ceremony. Interment and Military rites were held by the Harlan American Legion Helmer Reyelt Post No. 150 and Shelby County VFW Post No. 941 in the Harlan Cemetery.
