Description	:	Robert Douglas Smith, 66, of Des Moines, and formerly of Batavia, IA passed away Thursday, February 25, 2016 at his home. Burial will follow in the Batavia Cemetery. Robert Douglas Smith was born April 22, 1949, and was the son of Leo and Dorothy “Frescoln” Smith. His early years were spent helping on the family farm near Batavia. He attended school locally before going to Parsons College in Fairfield, IA. Upon leaving college he returned to help on the farm. Robert Douglas Smith was born April 22, 1949, and was the son of Leo and Dorothy “Frescoln” Smith. His early years were spent helping on the family farm near Batavia. He attended school locally before going to Parsons College in Fairfield, IA. Upon leaving college he returned to help on the farm. Robert enlisted in the Army National Guard in the summer of 1970 and remained active for many years to follow. In 1973 Robert married Nancy Eller and they became parents to two children, Julie and Tom. Robert and Nancy later divorced and Robert continued to work on the family farm. The farm remained his home up until a few years ago when it was sold and he moved to Des Moines. In his free time he enjoyed computer games, cheering on the Green Bay Packers, and watching NHRA races. He always liked a good road trip, especially when it involved going to see his family. Robert was preceded in death by his parents, and a sister, Patti Jones. Left to honor his memory are his children, six grandchildren, as well as many extended family and friends.
