Lee enlisted in the Confederate States Army at Isle of Hope, Georgia into the 20th Georgia battalion of Confederate Calvary in the Spring of 1862. In early 1864 his unit was sent to Virginia where it participated in the battles of the Wilderness, Cold Harbor, and Petersburg. At Appromattox a portion of the command broke through the Union lines and joined with General Johnston in North Carolina, participating in the battle at Bentonville. Private Lee mentions being captured at Stoney Creek, Virginia in his pension application. There were two battles of note at Stoney Creek, one in June and one in December of 1864. Private Lee was released from service at Hilton Head, South Carolina at the close of the war. After the war he lived most of his life along the Suwannee River in the communities of Benton and Suwannee Shoals, in North Columbia County, Florida.
