Gohn is a walking institution: a bartender who knows a little about everything and everybody. He was born in this historical center of Montana and expects to-die here, his family's history paralleling the civilizing of his, native state. Gohn was appointed justice of the peace in 1926. No one has tried for the job since. "My grandfather was one of the first men in, my father one of the first babies born," he said, referring to the time when gold fever brought thousands of miners to nearby gulches where an estimated $100 million in gold eventually was taken in placer mining operations. "He was one of the vigilantes who helped hang Henry Plummer. You know, the territorial sheriff who headed the road agent gangs in the 1860s. Gohn's business is in a two story, red brick building that once housed the territorial administration's offices. He celebrated his 70th birthday Jan. 11. More than 100 persons attended. The winter resident population here is about 140. In the summer, Gohn estimates 100,000 persons tour the remains of the famed mining camp, once known as much for its lawlessness as its instant millionaires. "See that chair? Townspeople bought that for me at Christmas." It's a plush, burgundy-colored leather recliner. With his back to the door, Gohn can often tell who is coming in. He knows most of his customers by their first names. "I see you're lookin' good today," he often says. Gohn is a jovial person, gray-haired but spry, He dresses casually, his blue cardigan sweater falling open as he leans on the bar to address the person sitting across from him. Like a true bartender, his language is sometimes spicy. "I use automatic pourers now," he said, nodding toward the various bottles lining the 90-year-old backbar. "No problems, just pour." Each bottle has its place, the same brand of Scotch whiskey right next to the cash register year after year. Gohn gets few calls for fancy drinks. "When I make a zombie I charge $3 for it so I don't, make too many." The drink is built around rums of varying weights, poured gingerly. A favorite bar subject is fishing some of the region's famous trout streams: the Ruby, Madison and Big Hole rivers. Nels Salmen, a local miner, mentioned the productiveness of fishing with maggots as bait. "Only problem is when they get cold they get brittle. Have to put them in your mouth to soften 'em up." "I've done about everything, but I've never had guts to do that," said the man on his left. "I quit," retorted Salmen, "when they started eating my snuff." Harry Fairchild, 71, countered by telling about a 4-point mule deer buck he saw during the last hunting season. "I took two quick shots, but by the time I got the cap back on the bottle he was gone." Liquor is only part of Conn's business. A town saying is: "If you can't find it at Bob's Place better go to Butte." He has a full line of hardware and electrical goods, plumbing fixtures, pipe, nails of all sizes, screws, tobacco and cigarettes, light bulbs, sporting goods and ammunition. Gohn and his wife, Margaret, are the only employees. He looked for five minutes to find a package of flints for a customer. "I know they're here someplace," said Gohn. He found them. There are even pickled pigs' feet or pickled onions for those wanting them. During the off hours, particularly in January, February and March, Gohn listens intently to television. He'll look a person straight in the eye and discuss something from Changing Times, Harpers, Newsweek, The Reader's Digest, Atlantic Monthly or American Heritage. "I just love to read," he said, groping for the switch to a special record player. Bob Gohn is blind - has been for half a century, He has not seen the mountains of Montana or his city of birth since a dynamite charge blew part of his face away and took the vision from both eyes in 1920. "I get taken every now and then I suppose, but it's usually by someone from out of town. Only thing makes me mad is when somebody moves my bottles."
