Description	:	Robert was born September 21, 1876 in Keokuk Co., IA The son of James William and Eliza Ann (Bell) Vanatta. He moved to Kansas with his family as a small child. At the age of 24, Robert and his wife, May, were living in Iola, Allen County, Kansas. May was born July 1873 in Iowa. Robert was working for the Smelter. He moved to Kansas with his family as a small child. At the age of 24, Robert and his wife, May, were living in Iola, Allen County, Kansas. May was born July 1873 in Iowa. Robert was working for the Smelter. At which time his brother Benjamin 14, was living with them following the death of Robert and Benjamin's mother. Robert returned to Iowa where he married Jennie Sylvia Arnold on February 8, 1904. Jennie was born March 10, 1879 to John and Elizabeth (Cree) Vanatta at Ringgold Co.,Iowa. Robert and Jennie had two daughters, Grayce M. (1904-1984), and Sylvey M.(1907-1985), both born Des Moines, Polk County, Iowa. Robert moved his family to Michigan Twp, Scott County, Kansas where Robert became active in working his own farm. Later Robert moved his family to Caney, Montgomery Co., Kansas where he worked as a foreman in the Smelter Plant in Caney. While living in Caney, Robert and Jennie had a daughter, Martha N.(1913-1989) born in Oklahoma. He returned with his family to Iowa where he farmed in Osceola, Clarke Co., Iowa, near Ellston, and on September 12, 1918 he registered for World War I Draft. He remained in Ellston where he served as both Mayor and Marshall for a number of years. In 1932 he moved his family to Mt. Ayre where he was custodian of the court house for 14 years. He retired in 1946. Robert passed away on November 8, 1956 in Mt. Ayer and was layed to rest in Ellston, Iowa.
