Mother: Betsy Devall Littlefield of Pawtucket, Rhode Island was daughter of Senator and Mrs. Eugene Littlefield, graduated from Harvard Seminary in June 1923. Father: John Eugene Littlefield Shaw from Block Island, Rhode Island was a jewelry designer and ran a jewelry store. Bob joined the US Coast Guard Jan. 13, 1949 and retired from the Coast Guard as Chief Quartermaster at Honolulu, Hawaii on Feb. 1, 1969. He later captained the ship "Adventure 5" running cruises in Pearl Harbor for nearly five years. As part of his service in the US Coast Guard, some of Bob's duties included recovery of the Apollo 8 spacecraft in the Pacific Ocean. The astronauts presented Bob with a bottle of wine that had been on the spacecraft with them prior to disembarking the recovery ship. His other tours included missions to Guam, Wake Island, and other destinations during the Korean War and the Vietnam War. One particular act of heroism included a tour where the US Coast Guard Cutter (CGC) Ironwood, a 180 foot buoy tender, was caught in a typhoon in August of 1960. During the storm the mast radio antenna was ripped off by high winds measured at 150 knots (about 160 MPH). To make a repair, Bob and a fellow crew member climbed a 90 foot mast under extreme conditions. The storm lasted for three days. Of 47 officers and crew members only one man sustained a minor injury. Additional ships Bob served on include: CGC Firebush, CGC Hawthorn, CGC Mackinac, CGC Gentian, CGC Cape Corwin, and CGC Bering Strait among others. Bob's further adventures included working on oil derricks in the Gulf of Mexico off of the coast of Louisiana where he would be on call for a month at a time. Bob made numerous friends everywhere he worked including PepsiCo. and Pinkerton Security. Bob is survived by his four sons Kenneth, Robert, Richard and David and numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren, and his wife of 41 years Betty Shaw and her daughters Alta Sharp, Deborah Watson, and Coralette Damme, and related grandchildren and great grandchildren.∼ September 16, 1930 - August 18, 2017 Robert E. Shaw, passed away Aug. 18, 2017. U.S. Coast Guard retired. He was a member of VFW #131, American Legion and Grace Lutheran Church. Survivors include his wife, Betty, four sons, Robert, Kenneth, Richard and David; three step-daughters, Alta, Deborra and Coralette; grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Services will be held at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 16, at Grace Lutheran Church, 2225 Washington St. Memorials to Grace Lutheran or VFW #131. Condolences to aspenaftercare.com
